Course on Ethics in Cultural Heritage Research

In the training of a doctoral student, specialist skills are essential but not sufficient. Contemporary research requires critical awareness, social responsibility, and the ability to navigate increasingly complex regulatory, institutional, and cultural contexts.
The module “Ethics of Research on Cultural Heritage” was created with the aim of offering doctoral students a space for cross-disciplinary reflection on the principles, values, and responsibilities that guide research in the field of cultural heritage. From data and artifact management to protection and enhancement, from relations with communities to combating illicit trafficking, to the implications of new technologies and restoration practices, the course addresses issues that cut across all disciplinary areas.

The course will be taught by Dr. M. Arizza (National Research Council - ISPC and CID Ethics) on April 20-22, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in Room 204 of the School of Advanced Studies.
Although it is aimed at second-year doctoral students, given the cross-disciplinary nature of the module, it is also open to other doctoral students who wish to enrich their doctoral and educational path.
