SSDA - Seminar of the Sapienza PhD School in Archaeology

Since 2015, doctoral students have organized the annual Doctoral Seminar in Archaeology, conceived as a space for interdisciplinary discussion and shared growth, with the scientific support of the Doctorate and, since 2024, also financial support. Since 2023, the proceedings of the seminar have been published in a specific series in the Scienze dell'Antichità (Edizioni Quasar) collection, thanks to the available budget.

  • Series No. 2: 10th Seminar of the Doctoral School of Archaeology (SSDA 2023). Edited by: Maria Teresa D’Alessio. Publication year: 2025

For the 13th edition, which will be held on February 9-11, 2026, in the Levi Hall, at the Ex Vetrerie Sciarra headquarters (Via dei Volsci 122), a common theme has been chosen to guide the conference:

“The Border: Defining, Crossing, Overcoming Limits”

This theme will be the starting point for a shared reflection and will be developed in its various facets and possible interpretations based on the individual research of the participating doctoral students.
The concept of the border can be interpreted in many ways: as a limit or line of separation, but also as a place of encounter, transit, and dialogue. It can refer to a geographical, disciplinary, methodological, or theoretical dimension; it can indicate the frontier of knowledge, the threshold between what is known and what remains to be explored, or represent a space of confrontation and tension between different perspectives.
This thematic perspective aims to encourage collective reflection, inviting each doctoral student to question the explicit or implicit boundaries that characterize their research path, considering them not only as limits but also as opportunities for openness, exchange, and innovation.
