"Italy, for Example, Is Just Incredibly Stupid Now”- Dot.ssa Lorella Viola
31/03/2022
“Italy, for Example, Is Just Incredibly Stupid Now”. European Crisis Narrations in Relation to Italy's Response to COVID-19 Crisis narratives shape public understanding and, consequently, the response to the crisis itself. In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, when in February 2020 Italy was experiencing more cases than any other country, the Italian response to the crisis originated debates over how to best respond to the outbreak. Informed by Critical Discourse Analysis theory and using narrative networks as a framework for the critical analysis of narratives, in this presentation I analyze the discourse strategies employed by experts, politicians and other social actors from Spain, France, the Netherlands, and the UK when presenting their domestic measures in relation to Italy's response to coronavirus. My analysis shows that the narratives attached to nation-specific decisions were highly culturalized and connected to country-specific shared experiences, such as a sense of national exceptionalism built in opposition with the denigration of Italy as the Other-identity. Attribution of blame and blameworthiness was also found to be a common pattern across countries according to which Italians were framed as wrongdoers but also as deserving blame. Finally, I also present a comprehensive “timeline of narratives” which opens avenues for a critical reflection on the impact such narratives may have had on the understanding of the crisis, including the creation of a negative climate of division and inappropriate crisis responses.

"Positività e Personalità"
26/02/2020
Earlier findings have shown that positive evaluations about oneself, life and future are related to each other and can be traced to a common latent dimension originally named positive orientation and then positivity. Further findings have led to the development of an 8- item scale that allows a direct measurement of Positivity. A review is presented of the major findings that point to positivity as a basic self-evaluative disposition, and that attest to its relevant impact across domains of functioning. Finally, some possible avenues for promoting positivity and to allow individuals to fully benefit from it are discussed.

"Un'introduzione ai Modelli di Equazioni Strutturali (SEM) con Mplus" -Prof. Michele Vecchione
27/11/19-29/11/19
This article is the second of two parts intended to serve as a primer for structural equations models for the behavioral researcher. The first article introduced the basics: the measurement model, the structural model, and the combined, full structural equations model. In this second article, advanced issues are addressed, including fit indices and sample size, moderators, longitudinal data, mediation, and so forth.

“A predictive processing theory of action affordances and intention reading: Turning goalkeepers into penalty killers."
5/7/2018
Champions League soccer matches are often decided through penalty shoot-outs. Elite goalkeepers block ~18% of all penalty's (and barely any well-kicked penalty). An improvement of just a few percent (in accuracy or response speed) may make the difference between winning and losing. Predictive processing theories assume that inferring another's action intentions requires a forward model of that agent's action, which can be obtained through learning by simulation. In an initial series of lab-based studies we have confirmed the prediction that goalkeepers benefit from acquiring a rich forward model of penalty *kicking*. Performance improved when goalkeepers trained penalty kicking and when they used first-person motor imagery to imagine what the movements observed in Champions League penalty kickers ‘feel like’. In an fMRI study, a pattern classifier was trained to distinguish motor imagery from visual attention strategies during penalty watching. Using a cross-decoding approach, the classifier was then used to determine whether observers used motor imagery or visual attention networks during an active penalty direction anticipation task that was entirely independent of the training task. Correctly anticipated (‘saved’) penalty's were classified as imagery in 2/3 of trials, suggesting engagement of the motor imagery network. Thus, goalkeepers do engage preferentially in motor imagery to infer action intentions of penalty kickers, and use the ensuing predictions to make successful saves.
