Offerta formativa erogata 2023/2024

III° year (16 hours)
(8 hours) Biomaterial applications in food and pharmaceutical fields
Teacher Laura Di Muzio
Learning outcomes

The aim of the course is to give an overview of the main applications of biomaterials in food and pharmaceutical fields with a particular focus on food packaging, drug delivery and tissue engineering.
The first part of the course will provide fundamentals concerning biomaterials and more specifically polymeric materials, giving in-depth understanding on their structure, characteristics and properties. In addition, the course will provide the ability to relate the biomaterial characteristics with their properties and consequently with their application.

Syllabus
  • Biomaterials classification.
  • Polymeric biomaterials.
  • Structure and properties of polymeric biomaterials.
  • Application in food packaging.
  • Application in drug delivery.
  • Application in tissue engineering.
(2 hours) Biomaterial applications in food and pharmaceutical fields: Case studies
Teacher Patrizia Policelli
The aim of this course is to provide an in-depth understanding of the application of light scattering techniques in the characterization of nano-sized biomaterials. Key aspects of light scattering techniques will be explored with a specific focus on dynamic light scattering. Practical problems concerning experimental results and data analysis will be thoroughly explored. In this way, students will gain the ability to critically assess experimental results and obtain reliable and reproducible data.
(2 hours) Biomaterial applications in food and pharmaceutical fields: Case studies
Teacher Federica Rinaldi
The lesson involves the application of nanotechnology in different fields:
  • Bioactive-loaded nanocarriers for food application: from designing to market.
  • Innovative and non-conventional dosage forms (based on nanocarriers) useful for skin applications: from designing to market.
Analyzing case study will be possible to highlight and identify different strategies to design, prepare and obtain efficient and innovative formulations.

(2 hours) Journal club
Teacher Chiara di Meo
The Journal Club activity concerns the analysis of scientific papers selected from recent literature regarding biomaterials used in advanced formulations in the pharmaceutical and food fields. The students, individually or in small groups, will prepare a ppt presentation which will be discussed in the classroom with the teacher. Journal Club is an invaluable forum for PhD students to enhance their critical thinking, communication, and research skills. Students actively engage with cutting-edge research articles.
(2 hours) How to write the PhD thesis
Teacher Giuseppe La Regina
This lesson will provide a comprehensive overview of the crucial steps involved in writing a successful PhD thesis. We will begin by discussing the importance of a well-defined research question and the development of a strong thesis statement. Key elements of effective research methodology and data analysis will be explored, emphasizing the importance of clarity, rigor, and reproducibility.
Furthermore, the lesson will address essential aspects of academic writing, including proper citation and referencing, maintaining academic integrity, and crafting a clear and concise narrative.
