Seminars on Anatolistics-Hittitology

from 3 to 5 December

The Department of Ancient Sciences at Sapienza University, as part of the PhD programme in Philology and History of the Ancient World and the Erasmus+ Mobility Lecture Series, is hosting a series of seminars dedicated to Anatolian languages and the Neo-Hittite world, held by Dr. Zsolt Simon of the Institut Universitari del Pròxim Orient Antic – Universitat de Barcelona.

The course, divided into four units from 3 to 5 December, offers an up-to-date introduction to current research on Anatolian and Neo-Hittite studies.

The first two meetings are dedicated to Anatolian languages, addressing their structure, new textual editions and the latest discoveries, with readings and discussions of texts such as that of Kalašma and new documents in Luwian hieroglyphics, Caryan, Sidetian and Pisidian.

The last two units focus on the Neo-Hittite world, presenting recent developments in history and geography, the debate on the definition of Neo-Hittite states, chronological and political issues, and a specific in-depth study of the Neo-Hittite pantheon, from the redefinition of local deities to the spread and survival of their cult.

The meetings will be held at the Faculty of Arts, Room F (2nd floor)
