Resources available to PhD students

Financial resources

The University annually guarantees a share of funding dedicated to the operation of the PhD programme, including the 10% increase provided for by DM 226/2021 and incorporated into the University Regulations to support research in Italy and abroad, including scientific publications. This budget is granted from the first year also to PhD candidates without scholarships and those in cotutelle arrangements, ensuring equal access to resources.
During periods spent abroad, all PhD candidates – including those without scholarships – may benefit from a 50% increase of the same scholarship for up to a maximum of 12 months (Art. 8.8 of the Regulations). They may also apply to the Sapienza call for international mobility for stays of 3 months. These instruments contribute to concretely supporting the internationalisation and autonomy of research. PhD candidates are also invited to participate annually in the University calls to fund “Avvio alla Ricerca” (Start-up Research) and Third Mission projects within calls aimed at promoting the scientific and economic independence of early-career researchers.

Spaces and workstations

The Department of Ancient Studies provides spaces and infrastructure for teaching and research, including classrooms for seminar activities. The reading room of the Roman History Library (3rd floor of the Faculty of Letters and Philosophy) is also available with priority use for PhD candidates and is equipped with workstations. A multifunction printer/scanner is likewise available for PhD candidates.
