Prehistoric Archaeology - lecture series: "Basic statistics"

PhD lectures for the 2nd year, open to all curricula (12 hours) Classroom capacity 20 people

This course will introduce the basic concepts of statistics and probability and their use in archaeology. Descriptive statistics (measures of central tendency and dispersion, quantitative representation), bivariate analysis, basic statistical tests (t-test, chi square, nonparametric tests, etc.) will be addressed. Basic principles and procedures of multivariate analysis (principal component analysis, cluster analysis, etc.), series analysis on settlement data and radiocarbon date frequency statistics will be addressed; also, use of statistics in spatial analysis (quantitative GIS). Concrete examples of statistical application on various archaeological contexts and materials will be presented during the course, and exercises will be given. The course will be concluded by a lecture of special relevance on the topic
