Third Mission

Members of the College of Lecturers and doctoral students are engaged in Third Mission activities
with important contribution in clinical trials and health protection initiatives, public engagement activities,
enhancement of intellectual or industrial property, and citizen empowerment.
 
I- Clinical Trials: The faculty members participate in numerous clinical trials. This contribution allows
them to consolidate a continuous and productive relationship with local, national and international companies.
PhD students with medical expertise from the 36th, 37th, 38th and 39th cycles participate as
sub-investigators in already active clinical trials (n=26) as part of their research project.
 
PhD students in the 40th cycle will have the opportunity to participate in clinical trials at clinical centers
of afference of the PhD faculty.
 
II- Health-protection initiatives: Some members of the College of Professors, with the involvement
of PhD students, are engaged in numerous initiatives aimed at protecting the health of the public.
The most recent outreach initiatives were in October 2023 and focused on lifestyle, prevention and listening
points in breast cancer.

III- Public Engagement Activities: College faculty members engage in public engagement activities,
documented by the intense and numerous participation of faculty members in scientific popularization
through publications dedicated to non-academic audiences, radio and television programs, publication
and management of websites, and in activities of engagement and interaction with the educational world.
 
IV- Enhancement of intellectual or industrial property: The members of the College are committed to
the enhancement of intellectual or industrial property.
 
They already hold Italian and international patents Proff. Rughetti and Pierelli
(nr. MI2001A000940 and WO2004039845A8; RM2011A000500 23-9-2011,
International Patent PCT: 24/09/2012 PCT/IB2012/055062).
For example, The patent for Industrial Invention in Italy was filed by Proff. Rughetti, Napoletano, Zizzari,
Marchetti and Botticelli (Application Number: 102022000011795 dated 03/06/2022 No. PCT/IB2023/055561,
https://www.uniroma1.it/it/brevetto/102022000011795).
PhD student Angelica Pace is a member of the research group that received a financing from MIMIT
in 2023 for the enhancement of "Proof of Concept" (POC) for patent extension and technological
advancement.
The most recent international patent "Improved method and means for spatial nucleic acid detection in-situ"
has been filed (Application Number: EP23215037, https://www.uniroma1.it/it/brevetto/ep23215037 on 07/12/2023)
in collaboration between Sapienza and MDC Center in Berlin (Prof. Ferretti and Prof. Rajewsky).
 
V- Citizen Empowerment: As part of the initiatives dedicated to Citizen Empowerment, members of the College
are part of several Diagnostic and Therapeutic Clinical Centers useful for patient empowerment, such as
the Regional Center for the Study of Rare Diseases and the Regional Neonatal Screening Center
for Genetic-Metabolic Diseases.
