New approach to harness the annual energy potential of operational water networks.
07-06-2023
The use of converted primary energy for heating and air conditioning currently represents 45.1% of French consumption. Water distribution networks, which are currently underutilized, could represent significant potential for the production of cold and heat due to the large quantity of water they transport. We aim to quantify the energy potential of these networks while maintaining their normal operation. Calculations of different power values are based on real-time determination of flow temperature and pressure. Interaction with the networks is achieved through heat exchangers optimized by minimizing entropy generation. This approach is applied to a cylindrical heat exchanger in dynamic mode. By incorporating the entropy generation terms resulting from temperature differences and pressure losses along the exchanger, the total entropy generation value is obtained during dynamic operation. In this configuration, the entropy generation related to the mixing of diverted water and network water is also taken into account. The total entropy generation is used as an objective function to optimize the geometry of the heat exchanger (with variable length and diameters) and fluid flows. Results from the application on an actual network are presented.

Dynamics and modeling of vehicle fires
19-07-2022
The risk associated to fire events has increased during the past years, as a consequence of a rapid development of new technologies and new materials, which has not been followed by an equivalent rapid upgrade of current fire safety regulations.
Such risk is not limited to industrial processes and industries, but extends also to every-day premises such as residential buildings, car parks and infrastructures. With respect to the latter in particular, the increased size of cars, the use of more plastic materials, as well as the increasing numbers of alternative fueled vehicles (hydrogen and EV) has led to a significant increment of the average fuel load of cars and of the consequences of such fires.
Such consequences are not limited to structural damages (such as in the recent collapse of Stavanger car park in 2020 or demolition of the Liverpool Echo Arena car park in 2018), but represent also significant hazards for people and environment. Two recent examples of this are the car and truck fire on the Euroferry Olympia, in February 2022, which caused the death of 8 passengers, and the EV fire on the Felicity Ace cargo vessel, which sank in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean with a highly pollutant cargo. This very recent event caught the attention of the media and re-ignited the debate on the risk of large car fires and the possible additional risk posed by EV in triggering or spreading the fire.
This seminar will focus on the dynamics and modelling of vehicles fires, with the aim of providing practical and conservative tools to assess the fire of a car and the fire spread among cars and indicate measures to avoid large consequences of such fires.

Polyhydroxyalkanoates: The Exciting Journey to Develop Circular Bioeconomy Applications
19-07-2021
Seminar of prof. Josè Maria Lagaron, Spanish Council for Scientific Research, Spain.
This presentation will gather the recent efforts carried out within our research group to characterise and develop applications for polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA), using both commercial grades, and experimental materials developed within several EU projects using the technology of Mixed Microbial Cultures (MMC).
The talk will provide first our current understanding of the structure-properties-processing relationship in PHA, and the existing challenges for their industrial implementation, then it will follow up with the technological strategies undertaking by our team to provide solutions, using the unique properties of PHA, to overcome existing hurdles in areas such as food packaging, adhesives, coatings and filtration.

LA SOCIETA’ SOSTENIBILE DEL FUTURO IL RUOLO DELL’ INGEGNERIA CHIMICA
29 gennaio 2019
