Guida

1st Year

November

  • Begin your research project and start defining the main objectives and experimental plan together with your supervisor.
  • Start attending the teaching courses included in the didactic plan. Please note that a minimum of 34 hours of teaching activities is required during the first year, so it is recommended to plan your attendance early to meet this requirement without difficulty.
  • You are also encouraged to begin thinking about your research period abroad, discussing possible destinations, host laboratories, and timelines with your supervisor, since international mobility is an integral component of the PhD program and requires advance planning.
September
  • Submit your annual report following the official format provided by the program. The report should summarize your research progress, activities, and any training completed throughout the year.
  • Present your annual report to the Academic Board through a PowerPoint presentation and an oral talk of approximately 10 minutes + 5 minutes for discussion.
Following the presentation, the Board members will evaluate your progress and decide on your admission to the second year of the PhD program.

2nd Year

  1. Continue your research project, advancing both experimental work and data interpretation according to the objectives agreed upon with your supervisor.
  2. Choose a research group at a university abroad where you will carry out your international research period. The PhD program requires a minimum stay of 180 days abroad, so early planning is essential. Discuss potential host institutions with your tutor and request formal authorization from the Head of the Board once the destination and period have been agreed upon.
  3. Attend the teaching courses included in the didactic plan and participate in seminars. Please remember that you must complete at least 24 hours of teaching activities during the second year, so plan your attendance accordingly.

For the final thesis defense:
The University Regulations on research doctorates state that candidates must be admitted to the final exam by the Academic Board and must submit their thesis for evaluation and discussion in order to obtain the research doctorate title in the first available exam session.
There are three sessions, each concluding with the final exam:

  • First session: by January 30th
  • Second session: by May 30th
  • Third session: by September 30th
For each session, candidates will be informed of the date on which they will present before the Academic Board. After being admitted to the final discussion, candidates must upload their thesis on Infostud. They will then receive comments from at least two anonymous reviewers appointed by the Academic Board.

General information:

  • The PhD program requires a mandatory research period abroad of 180 days at an international institution. The scholarship amount is increased by 50% for any study or research periods abroad, which must be formally authorized in advance by the Program Coordinator and supported by an official certificate from the host institution. The total duration of the funded stay abroad cannot exceed 12 months. Starting from the 38th cycle, PhD candidates without a scholarship are also entitled to receive an amount equal to 50% of a standard scholarship, proportionally calculated based on the duration of their research period abroad (up to a maximum of 12 months). This period must likewise be authorized beforehand by the Program Coordinator and documented by a certificate from the host institution.

  • The period abroad must be approved by the Coordinator through a formal request submitted on Infostud, under the “travel” section.
  • Mission authorizations must be entered both in X-UP and in Infostud under the “travel” section.
  • PhD candidates have an annual budget of approximately €1,600, which may be used in the following ways:
  • PhD mobility (travel and research stays in Italy or abroad).
  • Purchase of capital equipment necessary for doctoral research activities.
  • Purchase of consumables.
  • Participation in conferences and seminars.
  • Training courses and/or advanced training programs.
  • Laboratory analysis services, including external services strictly related to the PhD research activities.
  • Publication costs – The decision to publish a PhD student's work is made by the Academic Board, which determines whether publication is functional and relevant to the PhD program (e.g., open access fees for reviews).
Unused funds from one year may be carried over and added to the budget for the following year.
