This presentation highlights recent efforts centering on the total synthesis of
biologically relevant nitrogenous natural products. Each target molecule poses chemical
problems that serve as ideal vehicles for the development and application of new
preparative reactions.
Compounds of current interest include thiopeptide antibiotics, e.g. micrococcins P1 and
P2, Erythrina alkaloids such as erisotramidine, and polycyclic nitrogenous compounds
like tetrodotoxin and himandrine. The methodology component of each project and the
biomedical spinoffs that have emanated from these fundamental studies will be
discussed in detail.
