Educational goals and objectives

ENERGY AND ENVIRONMENT
In the coming decades, nations will increasingly have to deal with issues related to energy and the environment in order to ensure truly sustainable development on a global level; in this vision of growth, which combines available resources with respect for nature in all its aspects, interdisciplinary and transnational knowledge and skills assume fundamental importance, being the only ones that allow complex problems to be tackled organically that involve not only more properly technological aspects, but also social, economic and environmental dynamics on ever larger scales.
The PhD program in Energy and the Environment guarantees the acquisition of highly integrated multidisciplinary skills and knowledge, in order to train professionals oriented towards the world of research, business, national and international government institutions, and cooperation . These figures will be able to face, making use of the cultural means acquired during the course of the doctorate, the challenge of energy development, in harmony with the protection of the environment and man, in an international context that sees the participation of industrialized countries in the same way emerging and developing. This objective is achieved through five cultural curricula into which the doctoral course is divided: "Industrial and Environmental Technical Physics", "Machinery and Systems for Energy and the Environment", "Nuclear Engineering", "Energy Saving and Distributed Microgeneration ", "Aerospace Engineering". The five courses, while differing in the extent of the in-depth study of various specific contents, have a common cognitive and, above all, methodological basis, such as to guarantee a strong correlation between the different cultural sectors that pertain to the energy, environmental and environmental sciences and development policies. The PhD in Energy and the Environment, which has a duration of three years, is organized in such a way that it is possible to use all the skills present within the five cultural curricula and their respective scientific-disciplinary contents. In particular, since the issues related to energy and environmental sciences and technologies constitute a common heritage for all PhD students, the training structure of the doctorate is divided into a first educational phase dedicated to the deepening of preparatory and basic training topics for research and in two successive phases, aimed, respectively, at the deepening of the more specific aspects of interest of the different cultural addresses and at the development of the thesis.

1. Curriculum studiorum: for students who have already graduated at the time of the assessment of their qualifications, the Final Mark of the Master in Science Degree (master, specialist or single cycle) is considered, while for students who will discuss their thesis after the assessment of their qualifications, the Grade Point Average (GPA) obtained in
the courses of their master's degree will be taken into consideration.
2. Other qualifications: such as a second Master's Degree or Specialization or professional qualification, research grants or contracts, internships and traineeships, publications, documented participation in conferences, computer skills, certificates of professional training courses, certifications of knowledge of foreign languages (different from mother tongue), etc.
3. Project: The applicant must submit a project that demonstrates his propensity to carry out research and her/his ability to organize the various phases of the project independently. The project document shall not exceed a length not exceeding 12,000 characters (including spaces). This project, which must be submitted by candidates in order to take part to the call, will not be considered compulsory for the research activity of winner participants. In particular, the Examination Committee will evaluate: knowledge of the state of the art; originality and innovative content; clarity and completeness of the presentation of the objectives, methodologies and potential results; coherence of the project with the training objectives of the PhD.
Candidates who have achieved a score of at least 40/60 are admitted to the oral exam.

Oral interview The interview aims to evaluate the applicant's background of competencies and abilities and her/his research attitude. The Examination Committee will assess the applicant's motivations, interests and aptitude for research, as well as knowledge of the English language, through a 5 minutes presentation of the candidate in English and a discussion on the project submited. The presentation can also be prepared in PowerPoint or similar IT tools.
Finally, the Examination Committee will ask the candidate a question on one of the disciplinary areas chosen by the candidate, among those listed below:
1- Principles of Thermodynamics (thermodynamic systems, thermodynamic transformations, properties of pure substances, heat and work, the first law of thermodynamics, the second law of thermodynamics, entropy, thermodynamic potentials).
2- Heat transmission (conduction; natural, forced and mixed convection; radiation);
3- Thermo-hygrometric, visual and acoustic comfort in the built environment;
4- Thermodynamic modeling of energy conversion processes and critical evaluation of the performance of different systems (steam power plants, reciprocating internal combustion engines, gas turbines, combined cycles, cogeneration plants, turbomachinery);
5- Production of energy from renewable sources (solar, wind and ocean, bioenergy);
6- Applications of nuclear energy for a secure and sustainable future (non-power applications, medical or industrial applications);
7- Innovation in power production systems based on nuclear energy;
8- Distributed micro-generation, micro-generation plants for buildings, intelligent energy grids and storage systems;
9- Energy efficiency of buildings, near Zero Energy Buildings, BACS;
