Educational goals and objectives

ENERGY AND ENVIRONMENT
In the coming decades, nations will increasingly have to deal with issues related to energy and the environment in order to ensure truly sustainable development on a global level; in this vision of growth, which combines available resources with respect for nature in all its aspects, interdisciplinary and transnational knowledge and skills assume fundamental importance, being the only ones that allow complex problems to be tackled organically that involve not only more properly technological aspects, but also social, economic and environmental dynamics on ever larger scales.
The PhD program in Energy and the Environment guarantees the acquisition of highly integrated multidisciplinary skills and knowledge, in order to train professionals oriented towards the world of research, business, national and international government institutions, and cooperation . These figures will be able to face, making use of the cultural means acquired during the course of the doctorate, the challenge of energy development, in harmony with the protection of the environment and man, in an international context that sees the participation of industrialized countries in the same way emerging and developing. This objective is achieved through five cultural curricula into which the doctoral course is divided: "Industrial and Environmental Technical Physics", "Machinery and Systems for Energy and the Environment", "Nuclear Engineering", "Energy Saving and Distributed Microgeneration ", "Aerospace Engineering". The five courses, while differing in the extent of the in-depth study of various specific contents, have a common cognitive and, above all, methodological basis, such as to guarantee a strong correlation between the different cultural sectors that pertain to the energy, environmental and environmental sciences and development policies. The PhD in Energy and the Environment, which has a duration of three years, is organized in such a way that it is possible to use all the skills present within the five cultural curricula and their respective scientific-disciplinary contents. In particular, since the issues related to energy and environmental sciences and technologies constitute a common heritage for all PhD students, the training structure of the doctorate is divided into a first didactic phase dedicated to the deepening of preparatory and basic training topics for research and in two successive phases, aimed, respectively, at the deepening of the more specific aspects of interest of the different research topic and at the development of the thesis work.

Admission Procedure

Qualifications assessment Titles and project (max 60 points) will be evaluated according to the following evaluation grid:

1. Qualification (max 20 points):
1.1 Curriculum studiorum (max 15 points)
For students who have already graduated at the time of the assessment of their qualifications, the Final Mark of the Master in Science Degree (master, specialist or single cycle) is considered, while for students who will discuss their thesis after the assessment of their qualifications, the Grade Point Average (GPA) obtained in the courses supported in the master's degree will be taken into consideration.
1.2 Other titles (max 5 points)

2. Research Project (max 40 points)
To be selected for the PhD program, the applicant must submit a project that demonstrates the applicant's propensity to carry out a research and her/his ability to independently organize the different phases of the project. The project must not exceed a maximum length of 20,000 characters (spaces included). The candidate admitted to the PhD program remains free to select a different topic for the research activities during her/his doctorate.
In detail, the overall score will be built according with the following criteria:
2.1 Knowledge of the state-of-the-art of the topics (max 10 points)
2.2 Originality and innovative content (max 10 points)
2.3 Clarity and thoroughness of the goals, methodologies, and potential outcomes (max 10 points)
2.4 Coherence with the training goals of the PhD Course (max 10 points)

Oral interview Oral exam (max 60 points)

Admission to the oral test requires the candidate has acquired a score in the overall evaluation of the titles and the project greater or equal than 40/60. The oral examination has the aim of evaluating the background of competences and skills of the candidate and his/her research attitude. With respect to the syllabus appended below, during the oral exam the basic knowledge of Thermodynamics, as well as a theme chosen by the candidate among the ten topics listed below, will be evaluated (max 40 points). The Commission will also evaluate the motivations, interests and aptitude for research, and the knowledge of the English language, through a 5-minute presentation of the candidate in English (max 20 points). The oral examination shall be deemed to have been passed if the candidate has obtained a score greater or equal than 40/60. The minimum overall score for admission to the PhD is 80/120.
