During the first year, Phd students are asked to attend a series of common activities organized by the doctorate, as well as other activities prepared by the individual curricula.
An Academic Writing and Public Speaking Legal English course is planned for first year PhD students, aimed at learning and improving critical reading skills of foreign doctrine, academic writing skills and communication tools in English.
Furthermore, the doctorate organizes a cycle of unitary lessons on the legal method of research in which the teachers of the college are engaged. This course is supported by others organized by the individual curricula on specific topics with a smaller number of hours, related to the possible research topics of the doctoral students, with particular reference to international law, Italian and comparative constitutional law, economic law and environmental law.
The Academic Board organizes a series of conferences, conventions, lectures and seminars, held by teachers inside and outside the doctorate, whose attendance is compulsory for all doctoral students.
Doctoral students follow the lessons organized through advanced institutional courses as auditors:
a) in collaboration with the II level Master in European Parliamentary Institutions Mario Galizia for assembly consultants;
b) in collaboration with the II level Master in Fiscal Federalism, control of public spending and subsidiarity;
c) in collaboration with the II level Master in International Protection of Human Rights, also in order to fill any gaps and choose the topic of the thesis with greater awareness.
In addition, PhD students participate in support activities for journals linked to members of the teaching staff, observatories and laboratories (jurisprudence, reviews of new publications, etc.).
Method of choosing the subject of the thesis
During the first year, PhD students identify and specify, together with the tutor and, where present, the co-tutor assigned to them, the topic of the PhD thesis on the basis of the interests matured and the insights developed in the context of seminars and research activities. organized by the Board of Professors of the Doctorate. Under the supervision of the tutor and, where present, the co-tutor, the doctoral students prepare a provisional index of the doctoral thesis and identify the main bibliography on the subject.
Admission to the second year
At the end of the first year, the PhD students report in writing about their study and research activities. The Board of Professors, in evaluating the admission of PhD students to the following year, takes into account: a) the study and research activities carried out independently; b) their active participation in the teaching and training program organized by the doctorate; c) the publication of at least one article, review or sentence; d) the preparation of the thesis project.
