Final discussion of the thesis

FINAL DISCUSSION OF THE THESIS

The University Regulations on research doctorates state that candidates are admitted to the final exam by the Academic Board, that they submit to the evaluation and discussion of their thesis for the awarding of the research doctorate title in the first available exam session and that they have the possibility of requesting an extension to the PhD course in Physics up to a maximum of 12 months. Accordingly the thesis will be defended in the appropriate session taking into account the fundamental principles indicated below.

- the duration of the PhD course is 36 months, it is not possible to defend the thesis beforehand.

- at least 3 months are required from the submission of the thesis to the final discussion to complete the evaluation process and any updates to the thesis suggested by the external Referees (more details belows).

There are three exam sessions, the diagram shows the different phases that end with the final exam

To discuss the thesis in advance of the end of the chosen session (for example discussion in March for the second session) it is necessary to make a request to the Coordinator (see below on the procedures to follow for this request). The date of the discussion must clearly take into account the needs of the members of the commission who must evaluate 2-3 candidates (a priori the discussion in the desired month cannot be guaranteed).

Taking into account that the PhD course lasts 36 months, the thesis discussion deadlines in the three different sessions (January 30, May 30 and September 30) and the duration of the process (also taking into account holidays/summer breaks and the shorter session I) it is possible to defend the thesis in:

I session: the thesis must be defended in the period from November 1st to January 30th

Discussion in November - submission of the thesis by 15 July (request relating to the month of discussion to be started by the end of May)

Discussion in December - submission of the thesis by August 30 (request relating to the month of discussion to be started by the end of June)

Discussion in January – delivery of the thesis by the end of October
(preferably by 15 October)

II session: the thesis must be defended in the period from February 1st to May 30th

Discussion in February - submission of the thesis by November 15th (request relating to the month of discussion to be started by the end of August)

Discussion in March - submission of the thesis by December 15th (request relating to the month of discussion to be started by the end of September)

Discussion in April - submission of the thesis by Jenuary 15th (request relating to the month of discussion to be started by the end of October)

Discussion in the month of May – delivery of the thesis by the end of february

(preferably by 15 february)

III session: the thesis must be discussed in the period from 1 June to 30 September

Discussion in June - submission of the thesis by March 15th (request relating to the month of discussion to be started by December)

Discussion in July - submission of the thesis by 15 April (request relating to the month of discussion to be started by January)

Discussion in September – delivery of the thesis by the end of June (preferably June 15th)
