Educational goals and objectives

PHYSICS
The Ph.D. in Physics aims to train scientific researchers with broad general knowledge, and therefore, with full flexibility concerning any future choice, and with high professional qualifications in all the disciplinary fields in which physics research is active today. The goal is to bring doctoral students to levels of preparation and autonomy suitable for their placement in national and international scientific and technological research institutions, as well as in management roles in companies that require problem-solving skills. Aimed at these goals is the educational offering of the Ph.D. program, which consists of an initial period devoted mainly to advanced courses and a subsequent phase concerning a research activity in a specific field.

Admission Procedure

Written examination The written test aims to assess the candidates' knowledge and skills in the basic topics of Physics and their aptitude for problem solving. In the written test, one exercise in Mechanics and one in Electromagnetism will be presented from which the candidate must choose and solve one.
The written test is evaluated with a maximum of 20 points. Candidates and candidates who have obtained a minimum score of at least 8/20 in the written assessment are admitted to the evaluation of qualifications.
A syllabus with the topics covered in the written test is available on the website of the Doctorate in Physics (https://phd.uniroma1.it/web/FISICA_nD3503_IT.aspx).
language INGLESE

Qualifications assessment The evaluation of qualifications will be based on:
- average grade of bachelor's degree exams;
- grade of bachelor's degree;
- average grade of master's degree exams;
- research project.
The maximum score for titles is 40 points, divided into a maximum of 20 points for grades and a maximum of 20 points for the project.
It is not mandatory to submit the project, but, if produced, the project will be subject to evaluation and may give additional scoring (according to the above limits).
The research project must not exceed 1,000 words and must briefly describe the research that the candidate would like to develop during the PhD and the reasons why he/she intends to carry out this research project within the Sapienza PhD in Physics. The project may also contain indications of the knowledge and skills acquired by the candidate during his/her master's thesis work.
The evaluation of qualifications is passed if a minimum of 20/40 points is reached.
Candidates are admitted to the oral interview if the sum of scores of written text and evaluation of qualifications reaches a minimum of 30/60 points.

Oral interview The oral interview will be evaluated with a maximum of 40 points and will focus on the topics mentioned in the written test (listed in the Syllabus) and those related to the candidate's master's thesis. The interview may also assess the candidate's interests and abilities to work on the topics of the projects on which the additional grants are funded.
Oral interviews will take place on several days, always in the same room (sala lauree).
The first day of oral interviews is expected to be July 4th, but it may be postponed to July 7th (any communication to candidates will appear on the web site https://phd.uniroma1.it/web/PHYSICS_nD3503_EN.aspx).
Only the candidates who score at least 20/40 points in the oral interview enter the final ranking.
