More information

Immediately after enrolment, each PhD student submits a Study Plan indicating the selected Curriculum, expected study and research activities and a provisional Supervisor. The Study Plan must be approved by the PhD Board. Each new student is required to attend, in relation to his Curriculum and research interests, at least two courses for at least 9 CFU (with an indication to attend three courses) among those listed above (see "Delivered study plan" for details). At the end of each course, students must take an examination with the lecturer. Seminars and mini-courses are usually carried out by lecturers from other Italian and/or foreign Universities. Single seminars or mini-courses are usually not quantified in credits. The Board may authorize motivated deviations from the above rules, or study plans which include different courses (taken from other PhD schools, master degrees, bachelor degrees and highly qualified schools); some of them are listed in "Delivered study plan". The Scientific Board may recognize the equivalence of training experiences carried out in other universities or research centres, also abroad. Students are required to attend the seminars related to their Curriculum organized by the Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and SBAI Departments.

Method of choosing the subject of the thesis

Within eleven months from enrolment (except different indications from the Coordinator), every student must indicate a Supervisor and a schematic research project for the thesis. The project must fall within the research themes of the PhD Program. The Coordinator and the Board can ask further details and/or integrations and/or ask an external referee for an assessment.

Admission to the second year

Within eleven months from enrolment (except different indications from the Coordinator), together with the indication of Supervisor and research project, every student must submit to the Board a report of his study and research activities. The Board, within one year from enrolment, evaluates the documents and the Supervisor’s assessment and decides upon the admission to the second year, depending on the Supervisor’s assessment, the progress of research, and the fulfillment of educational duties.

Immediately after admission to the second year, each student submits a Study Plan indicating the expected study and research activities during the year. The Study Plan must be approved by the PhD Board. Each new student is required to attend, in relation to his Curriculum and research interests, at least one course for at least 3CFU among those listed above (see "Delivered study plan 23/24" for details). At the end of each course, students must take an examination with the lecturer. Seminars and mini-courses are usually carried out by lecturers from other Italian and/or foreign Universities. Students are required to attend the seminars related to their Curriculum organized by the Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and SBAI Departments.

Method of preparation of the thesis

The thesis is developed through the research activities, carried out in the laboratories of the department involved in the PhD activity or, if authorized by Coordinator, Director and RAD, in other Italian and foreign institutions.

Admission to the third year

Within twenty-three months from enrolment (except different indications from the Coordinator), each student must submit to the Board a report of his study and research activities, highlighting the progress and the status of his research project. The Board, within two years from enrolment, evaluates the report and the Supervisor’s assessment and decides upon the admission to the third year, depending on the Supervisor’s assessment, the progress of research, and the fulfillment of educational duties. The Coordinator and the Board can ask further details and/or integrations and/or ask an external referee for an assessment.

More information

In the third year, PhD students are not required to attend institutional courses, except the fulfillment of possible educational debts. The third year is dedicated to completion and writing of the thesis. Students are required to attend the seminars related to their Curriculum organized by the Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and SBAI Departments.

Method of admission to the final examination

Within 120 days from the expected session, each student must submit title and abstract of the thesis to the Secretary. Students should defend their thesis on the first session available after the completion of the third year. The sessions take place within 31 January, 31 May and 30 September (D.R. n. 1248/23, art.18, c.1). In order to make it possible to defend the thesis within the first session available, students are requested to upload on Infostud abstract, title and thesis within 90 days from such session, and of course within the completion of the third year. Within 90 days from such session, the Board identifies external evaluators. Within 60 days from such session, each student submits a final three-year report. Within 45 days from such session, the external evaluators submit their assessment, in order to allow the operations for the admission to the final exam and the final defense or the postponement/extension to the next session. The admission to the final exam is discussed by the Scientific Board in the next session, on the basis of the thesis, the opinion of the referee, the opinion of the Supervisor, the three-year report and a presentation to the Board.

Final examination

PhD students present the results obtained during the three-year period in front of the Examination Board in about 30 minutes. The Board also relies on the opinion of the referees, the opinion of the supervisor and the three-year report. PhD students answer to the Board about clarification and in-depth questions. At the end of the presentation and the consequent discussion, the Examination Board prepares the final judgment and proposes the conferment of the title.
