Educational goals and objectives

MORPHOGENESIS AND TISSUE ENGINEERING
This Ph.D. program in Morphogenesis and Tissue Engineering is part of the School of Doctorate in Biology and Molecular Medicine. The overall aim of the Ph.D. program is to provide cultural, analytical and methodological tools to perform high level-, basic- or translational- or applied-, research in the biomedical, pharmaceutical and biotechnological fields.

In particular, the research interests are distributed in three main curricula:

1) for the Curriculum in Morphogenetic and Cytological Sciences, the study and characterization of the mechanisms of tissue development, differentiation and homeostasis, the modulation of the functional activity of the cell, the biological properties of stem cells and the bases of regenerative medicine, the tissue engineering for basic and pre-clinical research;
2) for the Curriculum in Cellular Sciences and Technologies, the regulation of the cell cycle and apoptosis, the biology of spermatogonial stem cells, with the aim of potential use in medical therapy, for the treatment and prevention of infertility and germ cell tumors, the tissue homeostasis and neoplastic transformation;
3) for the Curriculum in Cellular and Tissue Biophysics, the techniques of dynamic modeling of biosystems, structural and computational biology, the use of brain computer interfaces, the study of cortical activity during cognitive tasks in humans, the development and validation of nanotechnologies for the delivery of drugs and nucleic acids in vitro and in vivo, the study of the interactions between nanomaterials and fluids biological technologies for the development of tumors for the early diagnosis of tumors.

For this purpose, the courses are aimed to teach the students not only notions (rapidly changing and evolving) but also: a) to acquire evaluation criteria to innovatively pinpoint unresolved issues, in specific fields; b) to design experimental strategies which address these issues.
The educational aims of the Ph.D. program are developed through research guidelines regarding the study The ultimate goal is to provide students with rigorous and in-depth scientific training and the tools to become successful and independent researchers. Skills with PhD completion, including project management, analytical and communication skills, will enable PhD students to pursue a career in academia, industry, or healthcare.

Admission Procedure

Qualifications assessment Candidates wishing to apply for a PhD position can find information on the procedures, methods, and deadlines by connecting to the Sapienza website (https://www.uniroma1.it/it/pagina/dottorati-di-ricerca) Call for applications of XXXVIII cycle.
The qualifications are estimated according to the evaluation criteria defined by the Doctoral Teaching Council (the evaluation grid is available in the call for applications):
1. Academic titles and transcripts (graduation date and score, detailed exams, grades).
2. Curriculum vitae. Please clearly indicate research experience, acquired technical skills, publications, and other qualifications that the candidate may consider useful for the purposes of evaluation, scholarships, research training courses, research collaboration contracts.
3. Letter of motivation. The candidate must indicate the reasons for the choice to apply to the MIT PhD program, must briefly describe the previous research experience, the acquired technical competences / skills and future scientific interests.

There is no minimum qualification score for admission to the oral exam.

Oral interview Oral examination consists in:
a) A 12- to 15-minute presentation, in front of the Commission, related to the experimental work conducted during the preparation of the thesis, or other experimental work, or of a research project selected by the candidate among the topics of the MIT PhD program. The evaluation will consider the clarity and completeness of the presentation, the way in which the various sections are balanced (identification of scientific problem and state of the art, experimental methodology, results, conclusions). In the case a research project is presented, the Commission will assess its originality and feasibility, the clarity and completeness of the aims presented, of the methodologies and of the potential results.
b) Discussion of the contents of the presentation.
c) Other topics selected by the Commission from among those that are inherent to the cultural topic of the PhD course.
d) Assessment of level of English.

NB: To pass the test the candidate must obtain a score of at least 36/70.
The schedule of the oral exam will be published on the PhD course website: https://phd.uniroma1.it/web/MORPHOGENESIS-TISSUE-HOMEOSTASIS_nD3525_EN.aspx
