In the talk, the mechanism of nitrogenase will be discussed. Nitrogenases are responsible for the reduction of nitrogen (N2) to ammonia (NH3). Nitrogenases are the only family of enzymes known to catalyze this reaction, a step in the process of nitrogen fixation, in which the triple bond of the inert N2 molecule is broken. In the seminar, features of and problems of biological nitrogen fixation will also be introduced.
