Laboratory of Optoelectronics

In the laboratory of Optoelectronics research activities on design, fabrication and characterization of optoelectronic and photonic devices are carried out.

Both linear and nonlinear guided wave devices are studied for photonic switching and filtering for optical communications and sensor fiber optic systems.

Low power photonic devices are studied made by using organic electro-optical materials , such as liquid crystals and polymers integrated on several substrate materials including silicon, glass and plastic materials such Polydimethilsiloxane for flexible photonic integrated circuits.

In the laboratory software CAD based on Beam propagation method algorithms, modeling development environment software are available on several desktop and laptop PC’s.

The laboratory is fully equipped to characterize photonic devices both in free space and fiber optic guided set-ups arranged on antivibrating optical benches. Instrumentation available in the lab includes several semiconductor laser sources (both emitting in free space and coupled to optical fibers) emitting both at visible and near-infrared wavelengths in the C-band of fiber optic communication systems, an optical spectrum analyzer (operating in the 700nm-1700 nm spectral range with 1 pm wavelength resolution), an infrared camera, both visible (Si, Ge and near-infrared (InGaAs) photodetectors, optical power meters, several fiber optic components, an erbium-doped optical amplifier and piezo-electrically controlled nano-positioning stages for accurate optical alignment of guided wave devices butt-coupled with either single-mode or multimode optical fibers.

The research activity of the Optoelectronic lab has been developing for about 20 years, through several national and international funded research projects, which contributed to establish a consolidated network of collaborations with many national and international academic and research institutions. Several PhD students’ research activities developed in the Optoelectronic lab were recognized with best PhD thesis awards issued by national and international technical societies such as Società Italiana Cristalli Liquidi and IEEE Photonic Society.
