Educational goals and objectives

SCHOOL OF STATISTICAL SCIENCES
It aims to train researchers and highly professional figures with specific skills in the study of the population processes in Italy and abroad.
The training activity promotes a multidisciplinary vision shared within the European Doctoral School of Demography, without sacrificing a methodological base. It provides the conceptual and methodological tools necessary for the study of population, its dynamics, and the interrelations that link the demographic behavior with the economic and social one.
ACTUARIAL SCIENCES
Curriculum in A.S. trains researchers with high scientific qualifications in the Actuarial Sciences.
Study and research activities are strongly focused on quantitative methods for measuring and managing the risks typical of insurance companies and for controlling the company's solvency.
The curriculum is the only one in the current national offering of Ph.D. programs dedicated to advanced research in Actuarial Sciences.
The training project consists of
a) advanced institutional courses (related to private insurance and social security)
b) thematic insights for starting research.
Students are encouraged to spend a period of study and research abroad. Among the destinations recently chosen by Ph.D. students, we can mention ETH Zurich, University of Copenhagen, Cass Business School in London, University of Lausanne.
METHODOLOGICAL STATISTICS
The program aims to train professional figures with highly specialized skills in the management of “statistical information” in its various stages of production: design and execution of observational surveys and experiments, development of methodologies, and data analysis.
The training project consists of
a) advanced institutional courses
b) monographic courses
c) start-up research seminars.
Institutional training is provided by advanced courses in a variety of subject areas, including Real Analysis, Optimization, Probability, Stochastic Processes, Advanced Inference and Multivariate Statistics.
The introduction to research is the primary objective of the program and is achieved through the identification of a concrete and relevant problem, supervised by faculty from within and/or outside the Board. It leads, over the course of the three years, to original results and the doctoral thesis.
Ph.D. students are encouraged to spend (extended) periods of study abroad, visiting internationally recognized universities and research centers such as the University of California, the University of Glasgow, Harvard University, Novartis (Switzerland), the Bielefeld University.

During the program, all Ph.D. students are encouraged to actively participate in all Department activities and research initiatives, and are involved in various funded research programs at national and international levels.
