ANNUAL REPORT A.Y. 2024-25
Cycle XL (First year)
The activity of first-year PhD students (40th cycle) focused primarily on training, including attendance of both core and specialized courses and the completion of the respective assessments. An integral part of this training consists of attending PhD Departmental seminars (the full list of the “PhD program in Statistics - DSS Statistics Seminars” is provided in the “Seminars” section), which allow students to engage with internationally renowned scholars and researchers expert in highly multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary topics.
Under an international agreement, one PhD student from the Demography curriculum spent nine months abroad to follow the research and training activities of the European Doctoral School of Demography (EDSD) at INED in Paris (France).
PhD students funded by five external scholarships (ISS) and one PNRR scholarship established contact with their respective host institutions to launch the specific activities of their research projects.
Regarding interdisciplinary organizational activities, four PhD students served on the scientific and organizing committee for the “XII PhD Day of the School of Statistical Sciences” held at the Department on June 10, 2025. During this event, two first-year PhD students also participated as speakers, presenting the preliminary results of their research.
As early as their first year, most students from the XL cycle initiated their research activities and actively participated in numerous conferences, presenting preliminary findings and publishing their work in Conference Proceedings and/or journals:

CYCLE XXXIX (Second year)
Second-year PhD students (39th cycle), in addition to their relevant specialized training courses and summer schools, largely attended the PhD Departmental seminars (the full list of the “PhD program in Statistics - DSS Statistics Seminars” is provided in the “Seminars” section). There has been a high level of academic mobility among second-year students: the majority (seven out of eleven) spent a visiting period in Italy or abroad for research activities related to their thesis projects. In particular, the four PhD students funded by PNRR scholarships completed their required periods at host institutions (ISS, ISTAT, AGENAS) and either started or completed their research periods abroad (Imperial College London, Trinity College Dublin, European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC), Brussels).
The three PhD students funded by external scholarships (Trenitalia, ISS, Regione Lazio) actively collaborated with the research groups of the funding bodies, defining and carrying out the specific activities of their projects.
Most PhD students presented their research results during events organized at the Department of Statistical Sciences to promote the exchange of ideas among young researchers and students from different disciplines. Specifically, two PhD students served on the scientific and organizing committee for the workshop “XII PhD Day, Department of Statistical Sciences (Sapienza), June 10, 2025” and some also presented the progress of their research.
Furthermore, second-year PhD students presented their research advancements at numerous national and international conferences and produced several publications in journals and/or collective volumes:

CYCLE XXXVIII (Third year)
Third-year PhD students (38th cycle) dedicated their year to their individual research projects aimed at drafting their final theses. They largely attended the PhD Departmental seminars (the full list of the “PhD program in Statistics - DSS Statistics Seminars” is provided in the “Seminars” section), as well as seminars, workshops, and courses on specific topics related to their research. Some students continued visiting periods abroad that had begun during their second year.
Almost all third-year PhD students (16 out of 18) presented their research activities and the progress of their theses during the “XII PhD Day” organized at the Department of Statistical Sciences (June 10, 2025). One of them also contributed to the organization of the event.
