Educational goals and objectives

BIOCHEMISTRY
The PhD in Biochemistry, part of the doctoral training in biomolecular and biomedical sciences, aims to train young scientists who can:
identify key scientific problems in life sciences; address and solve molecular issues in both basic and applied biochemistry (bioenergetics, enzymology, recombinant protein expression and purification, protein structure and chemistry, metabolism, drug discovery); develop experimental skills and apply suitable techniques for innovative research; gain a broad and interdisciplinary scientific foundation; critically interpret data and present findings effectively at national and international levels.

Research areas include:
1) Biochemistry of prokaryotes and eukaryotes: study of physiological/pathological processes, oxidative stress, energy metabolism, vitamins, and cofactors.
2) Proteomics and metabolomics: redox proteomics, signal transduction, neurodegeneration, chronic inflammation, aging, cancer, transcriptomics.
3) Structural and molecular biology: protein-protein, protein-nucleic acid, and protein-ligand complexes via X-ray crystallography and cryo-EM.
4) Molecular biophysics: protein folding, stability, molecular interactions, enzymatic/redox catalysis, bioenergetics.
5) Bioinformatics: computational analysis of macromolecules, protein design, genomics, drug development, and algorithm creation.
6) Applied biochemistry and biotechnologies: metabolic engineering, neurodegenerative/infectious diseases, nanotechnologies, drug targets, development of novel antimicrobials, green chemistry.

The program supports key priorities of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), including new therapeutic agents, aging, complex diseases, omics approaches, and targeted drug delivery systems. Training includes lectures, seminars, and courses by Italian and international experts from academia, research institutes, and industry. PhD students engage actively in the scientific community through journal clubs, conferences, workshops, the National Meeting of PhD Students in Biochemical Disciplines, and the annual Symposium of the Doctoral School in Biology and Molecular Medicine (BeMM).

Research progress is monitored through annual reports, oral presentations, and thesis evaluations. The goal is to train ethical, rigorous, and independent researchers ready to contribute to science in academia and industry.

Admission Procedure

Qualifications assessment The evaluation of qualifications will concern only the graduate degree grade. If the candidate is waiting to graduate - still within 10/31/2025 - the average of the exam marks, taken for the Master's Degree, will be used.
Note: in case of applicants with foreign evaluation marks, the Evaluation Committee will establish the proper correspondence.

The candidates must present also a declaration that attest, under their responsibility, the thesis topic.

Candidates who have obtained at least 2/5 points in the evaluation of qualifications will be admitted to the written test

Written examination The written test consists in the production of a paper, written in italian or english language, completed in the classroom, on a topic of general biochemistry, extracted from three tracks prepared by the Commission. The paper will be evaluated by the Commission on the basis of the congruity with the subject matter of the test, the clarity and the completeness of the discussion.

Candidates who have obtained at least 40/60 points in the evaluation of the written test are eligible for the oral test

Recommended texts:
J. Voet, D. Voet, & C.W. Pratt, Fundamentals of Biochemistry (Zanichelli)
D.L. Nelson & M.M.Cox, Lehninger Principles of Biochemistry (Freeman & Co)
language ITALIANO
INGLESE

Oral interview Description of the test: candidates who have passed the written test must sit an interview with the Selection Committee.
During this interview the Commission will proceed to:
1) a discussion with the candidate of the written test
2) verification of the candidate's general scientific culture and of his/her aptitude to tackle laboratory research both from a theoretical and methodological point of view, evaluating
the clarity, the mastery and the specific competence on the treated subject.
3) assessment of the degree of knowledge and fluency of the English language.

Candidates who have obtained at least 40/60 points in the evaluation pass the oral exam.
