Educational goals and objectives

EARTH SCIENCES
The three-year long Ph.D. program in Earth Sciences (Dottorato di Ricerca in Scienze della Terra) promotes original scientific research and cultural development in 1) geosciences and 2) environment and Cultural Heritage.
During the first two years of the program, each Ph.D. student is required to develop his research project and attend courses, seminars and other training activities either in Italy or abroad, according to a training/research programme approved by the Ph.D. Program Committee once a year. The student’s training/research activities are supervised by an academic advisor (plus an external co-advisor, if appropriate). At the end of the 3 years of study and research, the Ph.D. candidate is required to submit a final thesis, either in Italian or English.

Curriculum 1) Geosciences:
This curriculum promotes original research in advanced topics of the various geosciences. The overall objective of this curriculum is the acquisition by the Ph.D. student of individual autonomy and personal awareness in scientific research, while developing specific skills in one or more fields of the Earth Sciences. Some specific objectives in the various fields are here briefly depicted:
- Physico-chemical characterization of geomaterials: definition of structural models of crystalline and quasi-crystalline materials (both natural and synthetic); physico-chemical characterization of minerals, rocks, silicate melts, fluids, aqueous solutions and gases to achieve reconstruction of their formation and transformation history.
- Stratigraphy and geological correlation with geodynamics (endogenous and exogenous processes): identification and investigation of regional and global trends in the dynamics of the Earth in geological time, reconstruction of paleo-environment.
- Global geodynamics and peri-mediterranean basin evolution: modelling of orogenesis evolution, definition of mutual relationships among tectonic, volcanic and petrogenetic events.
- Applied geology, geomorphology and geoengineering: definition of mutual relationships between environment and society including geologic risks management, geo-resources exploration, and reduction of environmental pollution.

Curriculum 2) Environment and Cultural Heritage
This curriculum aims at implementing advanced multidisciplinary training and research in areas related to protection of the environment and of the Cultural Heritage. Several departments of Sapienza university (Earth Sciences, Environmental biology, Chemistry, Physics, Basic and Applied Sciences for Engineering ) and research institutions (CNR, ISPRA, ENEA, various superintendences for archaeological heritage) are involved in the implementation of this curriculum. At the end of the three-year program, the Ph.D. doctor will be able to manage, in an independent way, open questions existing in the investigated field and to offer original solutions in terms of scientific, technical, historical/artistic/archaeological perspectives.

Admission Procedure

Qualifications assessment 1. CV and professional titles: max score 15

The final score will be calculated by the following scheme:

1.1 University degree mark (Bachelor +Master degree programs): max score 5

For students that will graduate (Master) just before 31 October 2022, the Evaluation Committee will calculate the average grade resulting from the list of the exams (max score 2).

1.2 Publications (JCR-ISI, non JCR-ISI, books or monographs, abstracts): max score 4

1.3 Previous experiences in Italy and abroad (training, research, job): max score 3

1.4 Other qualifications evaluated by the Committee: max score 3

The score of CV will be normalized with respect to the date of Bachelor degree or with respect to the date of the last exam for students without the Bachelor degree.

2. Research project: max score 45 2. Research project: max score 45

In the research project, the candidate must demonstrate clear abilities to design, organize and develop the scientific research in total autonomy. The full text must not exceed 10,000 characters (excluding spaces). The text in excess will not be considered by the Evaluation Committee.

2.1. The project, written in Italian or English, may contain up to a maximum of 5 figures and must include the following information:
a) title of the research project (max 100 characters);
b) research objectives (max 900 characters), first describing the general objective and then identifying the specific objective. In the context of a scientific topic, the general objective of the project ("overall objective" or "goal") consists in the solution of a very general problem and represents a very high goal (which requires a lot of time and/or a multidisciplinary approach). The specific objective is to solve a specific problem and that is what the candidate undertakes to achieve at the end of the three years. The specific objective, which contributes to the achievement of the general objective, may in turn have sub-objectives, normally it is expressed through a noun and not through a verb (it is the goal, not the path) and must be SMART (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, Time-bound). The results expected during the individual research phases should not be described in this section (see following points);
c) state of the art with essential bibliography (max 4,000 characters) which clearly reveals the knowledge of the topics covered and the identification of one or more open problems to which the project intends to respond (with the achievement of the specific objective);
d) brief presentation of the various activities (training, research and dissemination) foreseen during the three years of the project (max 5,000 characters), including national and international mobility. It should be noted that during the three years it will be mandatory to carry out at least 1 month of stay at universities and/or research centers abroad;
e) time schedule in graphic form including all the activities (training, research, dissemination and mobility) foreseen during the three years of the project.

2.2. The following points will be carefully considered by the Evaluation Committee:
a) clarity and completeness of the specific objectives, research strategy, and Gantt chart;
b) relevance of the project to the educational goals of the PhD program;
c) knowledge of the state of the art and definition of the open issues;
d) innovative aspects of the project;
e) feasibility of the project.

Only the candidates with a minimum score of 45/60 (i.e., the sum of scores obtained for CV and professional titles plus research project) will be admitted to the interview.

Oral interview 3. Interview: max score 60

In the case of a high number of candidates, the Evaluation Committee will continue the interview process in the following days. The interview will focus on the research project, CV and professional titles of the candidates. The interview will also include a short test to verify the proficiency in English.

Only the candidates with a minimum interview score of 36/60 will be admitted to the final ranking list.

The minimum score required to be admitted to the final ranking list is 81/120.
