A partire dal 2024, i programmi di dottorato in Matematica delle università di Sapienza, Tor Vergata e Roma Tre organizzano congiuntamente corsi istituzionali di base su tematiche di ricerca fondamentali nei seguenti ambiti: Algebra e Geometria, Analisi, Analisi Numerica e Informatica, Didattica, Logica e Storia, Fisica Matematica, Probabilità. Tali corsi presentano argomenti di ricerca avanzati rispetto a quelli dei corsi di laurea magistrale, pur mantenendo un carattere di base e fondamentale dal punto di vista della ricerca matematica moderna. Tutte le dottorande ed i dottorandi dei tre programmi sono invitati a frequentarne almeno due. Starting from 2024, the PhD programmes in Mathematics at the Universities of Sapienza, Tor Vergata, and Roma Tre jointly organize core institutional courses on fundamental research topics in the following areas: Algebra and Geometry, Analysis, Numerical Analysis and Computer Science, Didactics, Logic and History, Mathematical Physics, and Probability. These courses present research topics that are more advanced than those covered in Master's degree programmes, while retaining a foundational and essential character from the perspective of modern mathematical research. All PhD candidates of the three programmes are expected to attend at least two of these courses. | Modalità di scelta dell'argomento della tesi: |
Le dottorande ed i dottorandi sono scelti in base ad una procedura che mette in rilievo i loro interessi scientifici. Quando entrano a far parte del dottorato in matematica vengono seguiti dalla coordinatrice o dal coordinatore che li guida nella scelta dei corsi e nella scelta di una direttrice o un direttore di tesi, figura molto importante per le dottorande ed i dottorati in matematica. La scelta della tesi viene fatta insieme alla direttrice o al direttore di tesi; spesso è un problema che questi ultimi propongono alla dottoranda o al dottorando.
PhD candidates are selected through a process that emphasizes their scientific interests. Upon entering the PhD programme in Mathematics, they are supervised by the programme coordinator, who guides them in the choice of courses and in selecting a thesis advisor, a figure of central importance for doctoral students in mathematics. The choice of the thesis topic is made in agreement with the advisor; it is often based on a research problem proposed by the latter.

| Modalità delle verifiche per l'ammissione all'anno successivo |
Alla fine del primo anno di dottorato le dottorande ed i dottorandi devono aver superato, con successo, gli esami relativi alle attività formative previste e approvate dal collegio. Inoltre devono aver individuato in maniera chiara un'area di ricerca e un soggetto di tesi. Entro il mese di ottobre successivo all'immatricolazione ogni dottoranda ed ogni dottorando che abbiano completato il primo anno di studi scrive una dettagliata relazione nella quale spiega quale sia il problema di ricerca che intende affrontare nella sua futura tesi di dottorato. Inoltre, compare davanti al collegio per dare una presentazione dei temi di ricerca dimostrando, in particolare, di aver acquisito gli strumenti necessari per lo svolgimento della tesi. Studentesse e studenti che risultino poco convincenti non sono ammessi all'anno successivo; per i casi dubbi le dottorande ed i dottorandi vengono ammessi all'anno successivo con riserva e sottoposti a un'ulteriore verifica dopo alcuni mesi.
By the end of the first year, PhD candidates are required to have successfully passed the examinations related to the training activities approved by the doctoral board. They must also have clearly identified a research area and a thesis topic. By October following their enrolment, each candidate who has completed the first year must submit a detailed report outlining the research problem they intend to address in their doctoral thesis. In addition, they are required to present their research topics before the doctoral board, demonstrating, in particular, that they have acquired the necessary tools for carrying out their thesis work. Candidates whose performance is deemed unsatisfactory are not admitted to the following year; in borderline cases, candidates may be admitted conditionally and are subject to a further evaluation after a few months.

Sono previste giornate di incontro in cui gli studentesse e studenti di dottorato sono invitati a presentare i loro risultati difronte alle college e ai colleghi della scuola di dottorato e alle e ai docenti del dipartimento di matematica.
Meetings are regularly organized during which PhD candidates are invited to present their research results to their peers within the doctoral school and to the faculty members of the Department of Mathematics.
