The teaching programme includes lectures, seminars and laboratories for a total of 10 CFU corresponding to 60 hours, of which a minimum of 40 hours are spent in lectures and seminars and laboratories. The remaining CFU are taken by PhD students through research work conducted under the constant supervision of tutors. The range on offer is broad in order to allow PhD students in the various curricula greater choice.

Method of choosing the subject of the thesis

The topic is stated in the research project, which, submitted in the applications, constitutes one of the most important assessment qualifications. The topic is then presented to the Board of the PhD course, which is asked to approve it and indicate one or more tutors.

Admission to the second year

At the end of the academic year, PhD students submit a detailed written and oral report to the Academic Board on all the activities they have carried out and report on the progress of their project and research.

The training plan includes lectures, seminars and laboratories for a total of 10 CFU corresponding to 80 hours, of which a minimum of 30 hours in lectures and the remainder in seminars and laboratories. The remaining CFU are taken by the Phd students through research work conducted under the supervision of the tutors. Second-year Phd students are required to attend 20 hours of teaching. Here too, the breadth of the courses on offer is intended to give students in the various curricula greater choice.

Method of preparation of the thesis

Research work in the library and writing the first chapters of the thesis with constant supervision and advice from tutors.

Admission to the third year

At the end of the academic year, Phd students submit a detailed written and oral report to the Academic Board on all the activities they have carried out and report on the progress of their thesis research.

Method of admission to the final examination

The PhD student submits a detailed report on the activities carried out in the third year and on the progress of the thesis. The theses are submitted for assessment by two specialists from outside the Board, who may either approve the thesis or request additional time to improve it. Once the approval of the external assessors has been obtained, the tutor and co-tutor submit a detailed report on the candidate's thesis and apply to the Board of Professors for admission to the final examination.

Final examination

The candidate discusses the PhD thesis in front of a committee of three external members, who pass the final judgement.
