Educational goals and objectives

STUDIES IN MEDIAEVAL PHILOLOGY, PALEOGRAPHY, ROMANCE STUDIES
The doctoral programme (starting from the academic year 2018/19) gathers together a unique équipe of scholars engaged in research on the birth and historical development of languages and literary traditions in Medieval Europe (Latin, Greek, Romance, Germanic) on the written cultures which have preserved and transmitted them as well as on the formation and development of modern and contemporary literatures in Romance languages, both in Europe and on the American continent. It includes palaeographers, philologists and textual critics, specialists in Middle Latin, Medieval Germanic Languages, Romance Philology, Old French, Provençal, Galician, Catalan, Portuguese, Italian, Spanish, French and Hispanic-American Literatures.

Admission Procedure

Written examination The written examination will consist of an essay relating to the research areas covered by the programme. The panel will ensure that the paper contains questions relating to all the research areas: palaeography (Greek and Latin), medieval philologies (Romance, Latin, Germanic), Romance Studies. The paper will be drawn on the day of the examination from a pool of three. The exam can be written in either Italia, French, English, Portuguese, Spanish of German.

Oral interview The oral exam will consist of:
a) a discussion of the written paper;
b) an assessment of the candidate competence to carry out the proposed research
c) A discussion of the proposed research project and its feasability in time and with respect to the academic staff active in the programme
d) Candidates must show competence in at least one foreign language (Italian in case of foreign students) and in Latin if their proposed research falls in the field of Medieval or Renaissance studies

Candidates must also submit with their application a brief description (in Italian) of their intended research project (max. 8000 characters), which will be discussed and assessed during the oral examination. The project is not binding and can be amended or changed in case of admission. Failure to submit it, however, will be grounds for exclusion., the file must be uploaded within 25/08/2022
