Laboratory of Multimedia Systems

The Multimedia System Laboratory offers the framework within which to carry out research activity, in a personal yet supervised way, on one or more topics related to multimedia systems processing and networking.photo_multimediasustems_lab

Indeed, multimedia systems are key tools for development of new ICT applications and design of advanced multimedia services. Rather than focusing on single multimedia processing topics, multimedia systems research is devoted to understanding how to design new services and new solutions. Design of systems devoted to processing and exchanging multimedia data poses specific technological challenges, and needs not only solid knowledge of service requirements and standard technical solutions, but also the creativity to find new solutions for continually updating problems. In this “moving target” scenario, it is of utmost importance to acquire the “big picture” on multimedia systems key issues, existing services, and relevant standards; for a fast look at the basic principles related to multimedia communications services have a look at the contents addressed in the related MS course (see http://infocom.uniroma1.it/~colonnese/Multimedia_system_course.htm).

Research activity in the multimedia systems lab allows you to gain insight in specific problems, in which you can blend your personal background, your curiosity, and your technical abilities to carry out experiments or to solve a multimedia communication task.

Research tasks can deal with several topics, including but not limited to:

  • Multi-camera systems: data fusion, multimedia analysis, multi-view video sequence networking, perceptual processing.
  • Compressive sampling, processing and distribution of multimedia data
  • Energy-efficient ubiquitous multimedia networking
  • Optimal Foresight for Multi-user Multimedia Services
  • Measurements, Analysis and modeling of Dynamic Adaptive Streaming Traffic,
  • Mobile multimedia streaming in LTE,
  • Correspondence matching in biomedical multi-view video sequences.

Other tasks can be tailored on your own academic background (electronics, communication and networking, signal processing, biomedical engineering), at a complexity level compatible with your student academic plan, i.e. for B.S. Thesis, course projects, M.S. Thesis, as well as PhD Thesis.
