More information

First-year doctoral students are required to participate in the educational activities provided by the College and those agreed upon with the tutor. These activities can also be carried out within the courses offered by the Lauree Magistrali of Sapienza. At the beginning of the first year, each student must define a plan of studies coherent with the themes of his/her research, indicating the list of courses he/she intends to attend, including a synthetic program of each chosen course, according to the following criteria:

1) At least 6 CFUs among the teachings of the Master's degrees of the University on the topics:
- Analysis of dynamical systems (linear and/or nonlinear)
- Differential Geometry
- Tensor analysis
- Perturbative methods
- Optimization methods
- Robust control
- Statistics
- Signal Theory
- Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Deep Learning.

2) At least 6 CFU at the student's choice among the teachings provided in the University's Master's Degrees.

3) At least 6 CFU at the student's choice among the teachings provided by members of the faculty.

In addition to the educational activity, seminars/readings by faculty members of the PhD program are expected. First-year PhD students will be invited to participate in national and international conferences and congresses for which partial coverage of expenses is provided.

Method of choosing the subject of the thesis

Each doctoral student, during the first year, must agree with the board of teachers the choice of a Tutor.

Subsequently, and in agreement with his or her Tutor, he or she proposes a research project from which the purpose of the work and the methods of analysis that he or she intends to put in place can be deduced.

Admission to the second year

At the end of the first year, the candidate submits in writing and exhibits in public session:

(a) an account of the activity carried out, courses taken, ....;

b) a report on the research topic(s) towards which to direct his/her future activity.

In this report the following points must be clearly evident

- type of research (theoretical, experimental, design, ...);

- possible further study of disciplines necessary to conduct the research;

- an analysis of the state of the art on topics related to the research, documented by the relevant bibliography;

- What contribution is expected from the proposed research;

- a prospectus of resources, distinguishing between those already available, those needed and those desirable.

The Board of teachers evaluates the activities carried out and decides on the admission of the candidate to the 2nd year of the PhD program, motivating the decision.

List of courses / activities for the second year

More information

The training activities for the second year are agreed upon between the doctoral student, the Tutor and the Board of teachers in a way calibrated on the needs related to the research project of each doctoral student. Participation in seminars held or organized periodically by the professors of the Collegio is expected.
Second year PhD students will be invited to participate in national and international conferences and congresses for which partial coverage of expenses is foreseen.

Method of preparation of the thesis

At the beginning of the 2nd year of the course, the board of teachers will decide on the research of each doctoral student admitted and will provide him/her with the necessary tools and human resources. Each doctoral student periodically submits a written report on the activity carried out with any recommendations and/or suggestions to improve their activity. The Board of Professors periodically evaluates the activity of each doctoral student and, also on the basis of a hearing of the same, provides the doctoral student with the tools and human resources necessary for his/her activity.

Admission to the third year

At the end of the second year, the candidate delivers in writing to the Board of Teachers and presents in public session:

-a report of the activity carried out;

-a detailed scientific report of the research work carried out;

-the research program that will be the main topic of the doctoral thesis.

The Board of teachers, then, for each student:

-evaluates the overall activity carried out; -decides on the admission of the candidate to the 3rd year of the Doctoral Program, motivating the decision taken;

-Deliberates, for those admitted, on the research program of the PhD thesis.

Participation in seminars held or organized periodically by the faculty of the Collegio is expected.
Third-year doctoral students will be invited to participate in national and international conferences and congresses for which partial coverage of expenses is provided.

Method of admission to the final examination

By the end of June, the college appoints two internal reviewers for each candidate and the two external reviewers.

By the end of July, the candidate makes final presentation to the college (30 min).

By the end of August, candidate submits draft thesis to internal reviewers.

By the end of September, internal reviewers send the thesis revision to the candidate.

By the end of October, the thesis - revised based on comments received - is sent to the two external reviewers.

In mid-December, the external reviewers send their judgment on the thesis and admit the candidate to the final examination, or postpone the candidate's submission to the final examination by six months.

In this case:

(a) the new version of the thesis must be submitted by the end of June;

b) the new response of the referees must be received by the end of July;

c) The discussion must be delivered by the end of September.

Final examination

The examination takes place in front of a commission of 3 Italian experts appointed by the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering of the University La Sapienza upon proposal of the College.

In the case of a candidate for the title of Doctor Europeous, the examination takes place in front of a commission formed by 3 Italian experts and one foreign expert, appointed by the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering of the University La Sapienza upon proposal of the College.
