More information

The official language of the PhD program is English.
Three types of activities are foreseen: Courses (see above), Seminars and Journal Clubs.
Most activities are organized by our PhD course, or in collaboration with other courses of the BEMM school.
The participation of students in these activities is verified by collecting the signatures of the participants. Doctoral students are also invited to participate in national and international conferences and congresses for which expenses are covered.
The doctorate actively participates in the activities of the "B.E.M.M. Doctoral School" which sponsors, among other activities, a meeting every year (organized by final year students) among the students of all related doctorates. Students participate by presenting a poster. Some of them are selected for an oral contribution. The Meeting is planned for November 2022.

ONGOING ACTIVITIES (2021-22)

SEMINARS (see the dedicated section of the website for more details on the individual seminars)
Each year the school invites a number of Italian and foreign researchers to teach on activities and topics related to the interests of the course. Furthermore, thanks to the agreement with Istituto Pasteur Italia, doctoral students are also invited to participate in the Cycle of Seminars organized by Pasteur in Rome.
There is an important opportunity to attend seminars organized for doctoral students by the CIVIS Network of which Sapienza is a part, which are also recorded and made available to students. The link for this activity is also displayed in the SEMINARS section.

JOURNAL CLUBS (see dedicated section of the site for more details on Journal Clubs)
Every two weeks, students take turns presenting a critical view of a recent scientific article. Every month, with the exception of July and August, 4/5 recently published scientific articles are discussed, organized in topics of general interest and of great impact. Each doctoral student, according to an established calendar, presents an article to all the other participants in the course in the presence of at least 4 teachers. Furthermore, during these presentations, other doctoral students are entrusted with the roles of chair and interlocutors, in order to stimulate the widest participation of doctoral students and prepare them for critical dialogue on scientific topics. The list for 2022 is:
21/03/22 From discoveries in ageing research to therapeutics for healthy ageing
4/04/22 Computational and structural approaches to drug discovery and medical applications
11/04/22 Principles and perspectives of immunotherapy
02/05/22 Induced pluripotent stem cells in disease modeling and in regenerative medicine
16/05/22 Aptamers as targeted therapeutics: current potential and challenges
30/05/22 The impact of SARS-CoV-2 on the scientific world: new strategies for vaccines and therapeutics
13/06/22 Climate change: science and solutions
27/06/22 Dietary Approaches to Cancer Therapy

COURSES
The details on the ongoing courses are displayed on the dedicated section of the Website.
The Scientific English course is held by a mother tongue teacher.

Method of choosing the subject of the thesis

The scientific field of the thesis is chosen by the student following interviews with the members of the teaching staff who illustrate their research activities and describe the training path and knowledge that is expected to be acquired during the three-year period. The definitive topic of the thesis is definitively chosen during the second year.

Admission to the second year

Each PhD student, at the end of each year, must prepare a written report (the format to prepare this report can be found in the Section Documents of the website). Admission to the following year is approved by the teaching staff on the basis of the report and following a public presentation by the student of the status of the project (all other doctoral students of the course present) of the scientific context in which the thesis project, the aims, the experimental hypotheses, the results obtained during the year and any difficulties encountered during the course are placed.
The teachers of the school, in addition to assessing the progress of the project, comment on the presentation both in content and form and, together with the school's doctoral students, offer suggestions to the student. The report of the first year PhD students will take place in October 2022.

Method of preparation of the thesis

The second year of the doctoral course is considered crucial for the preparation of the thesis which is necessarily experimental. The thesis topic is usually finalized in the second year, with the overcoming of any difficulties of experimental design planning. These aspects are discussed in the presence of all the members of the faculty and students at the annual presentation, which will take place in October 2022 (see below).

Admission to the third year

The annual report includes a written report (see section FORMS for the report format) and a seminar. The teachers of the school, in addition to evaluating the progress of the project, comment on the presentation both in terms of content and in the form and, together with the doctoral students of the school, offer suggestions to the student. The report of second year PhD students will take place in October 2022.

Method of admission to the final examination

Students submit a final report on the studies and research carried out during the year.
The thesis is also sent to two external reviewers who fill in an evaluation form which is sent to the final evaluation commission. To be admitted to the final exam, third-year students must present the three-year experimental work to the Teaching Body in the form of a seminar. The Board must approve the work carried out, also having heard the opinion of the tutor originally designated by the Board.
Admission to the final exam is approved by the teaching staff following the evaluation of the external reviewers, the presentation by the student of the project results, the final report and the evaluation of attendance at the didactic and seminar initiatives. proposed by the doctorate.

Final examination

The final exam will consist in the public presentation of the results of the doctoral thesis work in front of a national external commission appointed by the Department on the proposal of the Teaching Body, according to the established procedures. The commission will have received a copy of the thesis at least one month before the presentation and will ascertain the quality of the work, the relevance of the results and the effectiveness of the presentation.
The national commission will be composed of university professors and national experts from sectors related to the theses presented by the candidates. Should one or more candidates present the required requisites and submit a specific application to the Board, a path to obtain the mention of Doctor Europaeus is envisaged, which also includes the presence of a qualified member who works in a country of the European Union.
