Educational goals and objectives

STUDIES IN MEDIAEVAL PHILOLOGY, PALEOGRAPHY, ROMANCE STUDIES
The Ph.D programme constitutes a centre of advanced research and learning which gathers together a unique équipe of scholars engaged in research on the birth and historical development of languages and literary traditions in Medieval Europe, on the written cultures which have preserved and transmitted them, as well as on the formation and development of modern and contemporary literatures in Romance languages, both in Europe and on the American continent. It includes palaeographers (both Latin and Greek), philologists and textual critics, specialists in Middle Latin, Medieval Germanic Languages, Romance Philology, Old French, Provençal, Galician, Portuguese, Italian, Spanish, French and Hispanic-American Literature.

The programme aims at consituting an international reference point for textual, palaeographical and Romance studies, as it includes many of the leading scholars in the fields in Italy. Moving from such position of excellence it also aims at attracting young scholars from Europe and beyond. Candidates are expected to know Italian, which is the main language of instructions, but applications from abroad are encouraged and candidates will have the possibility of writing their entry exam in English, French, Portuguese, German, or Spanish.

Topic: Connections between Occitan and French lyric poetry. An interdisciplinary approach combining music, philology, and digital humanities (ERC MUSICA FRANCA). The recipient of the grant will become an integral part of the research team of the MUSICA FRANCA project, based in the computer laboratory of the Department of European Studies, and will operate under the supervision of Prof. Stefano Milonia.

Admission Procedure

Qualifications assessment The degree grade, any publications and the research project will be evaluated, verifying their originality and feasibility in three years, also in relation to the scientific skills of the professors of the College.

Candidates who obtained at least 18/30 in the assessment of their qualifications and project are admitted to the written test

Written examination The written test will consist of a paper related to the specific topics of the course. The Commission will take care to develop topics that can be completed by candidates from all the areas represented in the program: paleography, medieval philology and Romance, medieval and modern studies. The topics will be drawn from threes.

Alla prova orale vengono ammessi i candidati che nella prova scritta abbiano conseguito la votazione di almeno 36/60.

Oral interview The oral examination will consist of:

a) a discussion of the essay;
b) an assessment of the candidate's competence to carry out the proposed research;
c) a discussion of the research project;
d) the language skills

The minimum positive score for the oral test is 6/10.
