Educational goals and objectives

ECONOMICS
The Doctoral Program (Ph.D.) in Economics is a three-year program in which students are trained to conduct theoretical and empirical research in economics. Students awarded our degree can fruitfully develop their research skills worldwide in academia, policy institutions, and research centers or undertake managerial responsibilities in private corporations or public organizations.
A distinguishing feature of the program is the emphasis on quantitative methods for microeconomic, macroeconomic, and policy effectiveness analysis. In the first two terms of the first year, students are required to attend courses in Mathematics, Statistics, Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, and Econometrics. The third term is devoted to specialized courses in economics. Admission to the second year is conditional upon successful results in the exams of the first-year courses. Starting from the second year, students work on their research projects. They are also encouraged to do research abroad. The Ph.D degree is awarded based on the quality of the research done for completing the thesis, which is expected to be an original and innovative scientific work in one of the fields of economics.

Admission Procedure

Qualifications assessment The qualifications that can be evaluated in addition to the research project are those indicated in the evaluation grid. Admission to the oral interview is subject to achieving a minimum score of 40/60.
Oral interview The oral examination consists of a discussion of the candidate's research project. The candidate must provide a detailed description of the project's objectives, methodology, theoretical framework, and expected results. The committee will evaluate the candidate's ability to justify methodological choices, in-depth knowledge of the state of the art in the specific field, the relevance and originality of the proposed topic, as well as the feasibility of the project within the timeframe of the doctoral program.

The Committee will also assess the level of English language proficiency.

Passing the oral examination requires achieving a minimum score of 40/60.

Criteria for the oral examination:

a) Knowledge of the main topics in Political Economy (microeconomics, macroeconomics, and econometrics).

b) Knowledge of the reference literature for the scientific research project presented.

c) Clarity of presentation, logical abilities, and appropriate use of scientific terminology.

d) Motivation for scientific research and commitment to completing the doctoral cycle.

The Committee will evaluate the inclination for scientific activity and the ability to organize the research phases autonomously and rationally. In particular, the Committee will evaluate the following aspects of the project: B1 - Knowledge of the state of the art in literature B2 - Clarity, originality, and content of the research objectives B3 - Appropriateness and quality of the research methodologies B4 - Feasibility of the project B5 - Relevance to the educational and scientific objectives of the PhD program

Durante la prova orale, la Commissione esaminatrice valutera’ ulteriormente i titoli, la validita’ scientifica del progetto di ricerca e la motivazione dei candidati per la ricerca scientifica. La Commissione, durante la prova orale, valutera anche il livello di conoscenza della lingua inglese Criteri dell’esame orale: C1 - Conoscenza dei principali temi dell’Economia Politica (microeconomica, macroeconomica ed econometria) C2 - Conoscenza della letteratura di riferimento del progetto scientifico di ricerca presentato C3 - Chiarezza espositiva, capacita’ logiche, uso appropriato della terminologia scientifica 2C4 - Motivazioni per la ricerca scientifica ed impegno a concludere il ciclo dottorale
During the oral examination, the Examining Committee will further evaluate the qualifications, the scientific validity of the research project, and the candidates’ motivation for scientific research. The Committee will also assess the candidates’ level of English language knowledge. Oral exam criteria: C1 - Knowledge of the main themes of Political Economy (microeconomics, macroeconomics, and econometrics) C2 - Knowledge of the reference literature for the presented scientific research project C3 - Expository clarity, logical abilities, appropriate use of scientific terminology C4 - Motivations for scientific research and commitment to complete the doctoral cycle
