Call for application 39th cycle

Additional call (deadline 13/10/2023)

Educational goals and objectives

INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY (ICT)
The PhD Course in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) aims at training scientists and engineers to design and develop innovative methodologies towards the design of systems, data processing, modeling, and applications, in the fields of electronic engineering, remote sensing, applied electromagnetics, information and communication engineering, and to conduct original research in these areas. Students are supported by supervisors, members of the Program Board, and scientific experts, performing highly and internationally recognized research. Students are individually assigned a specific research topic to be developed during the three-year course. The research carried out in the laboratories of the Department is supported by lectures and advanced educational seminars, taught by Italian and foreign experts. The PhD Program Board strongly encourages traveling to attend schools, conferences and workshops, disseminate results, and carry out research in Universities and research centers.
The Curriculum in "Applied Electromagnetics" has the objective of providing students with innovative tools and methodologies aimed at the design, development, and manufacture of devices, circuits and systems able to operate in the range between industrial and optical frequencies; specifically: antennas, circuits, biomedical applications, propagation, remote sensing and Earth observation.
The Curriculum in "Electronic Engineering" aims at giving the students a high qualification in the design, modeling, and manufacturing of innovative electronic components and systems, their measurement techniques and methodologies for quality control. It includes the areas of microelectronic devices and circuits, nanoelectronic and optoelectronic devices, analog and RF circuits, sensors and wireless sensor networks, bioelectronics, bioelectromagnetism and biomedical devices, architectures for embedded computing and digital systems, micro-and nano-electromechanical systems.
The Curriculum in "Information and Communication Engineering" aims at forming engineers and researchers able to develop innovative methodologies in the field of information transmission, coding, signal processing and networking. Traditionally, the main research areas of the PhD course are: wired and wireless communication and transmission systems; signal processing techniques and methodologies also for multimedia signals; networking technologies, services and applications.
The Curriculum in "Radar and Remote Sensing" has the goal of fostering the education of researchers and applied scientists, that are able to conceive and develop innovative methodologies for: (i) the design of both active and passive remote sensing sensors (specially Radar and Lidar), and of complex systems for observation, environmental monitoring, surveillance and navigation; (ii) the processing of the information collected by such sensors and systems for Earth observation, Physics of the atmosphere and planetary exploration.

Admission Procedure

Qualifications assessment Based on the submitted documents, the Evaluation Board will select Candidates to be admitted in the second evaluation phase consisting in the oral interview. The Candidates are not required to be present in this phase, since admission to second phase and score assignment is exclusively based on submitted documents. The Evaluation Board assigns in this phase a maximum score of 60 points to each Candidate. The minimum score required for admission in the oral interview is 30 points.

Oral interview The oral interview aims at evaluating the Candidate scientific knowledge and research skills in scientific areas covered by the PhD Course. The oral interview may be conducted, upon request by the Candidate, in Italian or English, and is carried out in presence. The Evaluation Board may consider to conduct the interview in remote form (audio-video conferencing, Skype, etc.).
During the interview, the Evaluation Board will evalute the following aspects:
- the Project proposal;
- the Candidate qualification in foundational topics in the area of ICT;
- the Candidate ability to address complex problems;
- the Candidate motivation to attend the PhD Program, and the Candidate ability to carry out research.
In the second evaluation phase, the Evaluation Board will assign a maximum score of 60 points to each Candidate. The minimum score required for passing the second evaluation phase is 40 points. The minimum score required for passing the second evaluation phase is 40 points. The total score achieved by Candidate is the sum of the scores achieved in the two phases; the final resulting score is thus included between a minimum of 70 and a maximum of 120.
