Educational goals and objectives

PLANNING, DESIGN, ARCHITECTURAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL TECHNOLOGY
The PhD in ARCHITECTURAL PLANNING, DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY was activated in the 29th cycle, AY 2013/14, with the unification of the two doctorates of the former DATA Department, now PDTA, active in the previous 28th cycle (PhD in Territorial and Urban Planning, PhD in Environmental Design).
It pursues scientific and educational objectives common to the three curricula into which it is divided (1. Territorial, urban and landscape planning; 2. Technological-environmental planning; 3. Design) aimed at integrating disciplinary contributions, identifying transversal research areas, offering a training plan divided into training activities, cultural initiatives, supervision of theses, evaluation procedures, recognizing, from time to time, the disciplinary prevalence useful for carrying out highly qualified research activities with public and private entities.
The Doctorate is aimed at the development of activities of a theoretical-methodological and experimental level, of a disciplinary and interdisciplinary nature, and of an international dimension; provides for the participation of doctoral students in conferences, seminars and workshops, in Italy and abroad; stimulates the scientific production of specialist essays, articles and proceedings, according to the criteria and evaluation parameters of the national scientific community.
It is oriented towards the formation of profiles with high critical skills, theoretical and applied research with skills in:
- interscalar interpretation and evaluation of the dynamics of physical-functional transformation of the city, the territory, the landscape, the architecture;
- the definition, based on interdisciplinary cooperation, of design methods in the various declinations and at the various scales of the project and the related evaluation criteria;
- the principles, rules, methods, tools, implementation mechanisms and practices, in the field of territorial planning, urban and urban planning and design, of the landscape and the environment; aimed at implementing integrated and interscalar strategies of urban and territorial rebalancing and regeneration, to create the public city, a new urban welfare, perspectives for ecological and landscape quality, protection from risks, social inclusion, development socioeconomic; effectiveness in the governance of the city, territories and contemporary habitats;
- the definition of new project articulations for the construction of physical-spatial-material structures, eco-efficient products, for technological innovation and environmental quality;
- the criteria for the design of the urban environment, the architectural space, the design product and their technological characteristics as open systems, which merge the basis of a systemic approach to the development and design of low-impact products in the concept of eco-efficiency ecological, for energy efficiency, bioclimatic comfort and environmental quality.

Admission Procedure

Written examination The written exam involves preparing a research proposal based on a critical observation that the candidate will have to develop on a topic related to this academic field, a topic that will be assigned to him or her at the time of the exam and that will be:
- consistent with the PhD’s aims and themes;
- linked to the scientific and academic characteristics of the Curriculum chosen by the candidate from the three Curricula that make up the PhD: 1. Territorial, urban and landscape planning; 2. Design; 3. Technological environmental design (this choice should be stated in the candidate’s application letter).
Score criteria for the written exam (60 points maximum): Knowledge and expertise on the subject of the written exam (maximum 20 points); Writing skills and clarity (20 points maximum); Acquisition of recent knowledge on the proposed research topic, thoroughness in exposition, objectives, methodologies and potential results expected from their development (20 points maximum).
The candidate will need to score a minimum of 40/60 to pass the written exam. Exam language: ITALIAN.
language ITALIANO

Qualifications assessment ASSESSING A CANDIDATE’S QUALIFICATIONS AND APPLICATION LETTER In order to assess a candidate’s qualifications (30 points maximum), the commission will examine:
_ the candidate’s Curriculum Vitae (15 points maximum), where all aspects, activities and qualifications to do with the admission procedure’s subject matter, gained over time, are listed, and also indicated in the compilation of the online CV; their verified knowledge of the English language and any certificates attesting a knowledge of foreign languages other than English;
_ the candidate’s application letter (15 points maximum), explaining their motives.
The Curriculum Vitae must be drafted in keeping with standard European format (with an unlimited word count).
The following documents will need to be included with the CV: a certificate attesting a minimum CEFR English proficiency level of B1 (issued by an English school authorised to do so); alternatively, a certificate attesting the candidate’s knowledge of the English language above B1 level, which will be considered a bonus point; candidates may also provide other certificates attesting a knowledge of foreign languages other than English (which nevertheless remains obligatory), which will be considered further bonus points.
An Application Letter (of no more than 10,000 characters, including spaces) must be written that provides information, answers and opinions on the following five points:
1) A brief presentation of themselves, summarising their profile as regards the following four parameters: education; interests; activities; and their particular field of study.
2) The possible research topic that he or she wishes to debate, analyse and develop during their PhD and the curriculum they have chosen out of the three that make up the PhD course.
3) Any past or ongoing experience in the proposed subject matter and chosen curriculum.
4) Any significant products (including publications) concerning the proposed subject matter.
5) The results the candidate expects from their PhD and the personal development – both as a scientist and as an individual – he or she hopes to see at the end of the threeyear research course.
Candidates will only be assessed on the basis of the documents they send in. Qualifications to be validated may be sent as self-certifications.
FINAL IMPORTANT NOTES: The maximum of 30 points of "Assessing a candidate’s qualifications" will be added to the assessment of the first two exams: the written exam (with a maximum score of 60 points, as mentioned earlier, but with a minimum threshold of 40 points) and the oral exam (with a maximum score of 60 points, as mentioned earlier, but with a minimum threshold of 40 points), coming to a total score for the three assessments of 150 points maximum. Candidates should be aware of the fact that the points awarded for each section of the admission process will only be published should a candidate pass both the written and oral exams. Candidates will be excluded from the admission process should they fail to provide a certificate attesting at least a B1 level in their English language skills (issued by an authorised English school), or should they fail to declare at the time they apply that they’ll hand in such a certificate by the date of oral examination. Last but not least, it is clarified and emphasized that, for the admission test in the category "foreign students in Overnumber/Sovrannumero", exactly what is described and required is valid under the "THE ORAL EXAM" (including the request for English language certification, with the addition of the language knowledge requirement Italian at least of the A2 level), as well as under "ASSESSING A CANDIDATE’S QUALIFICATIONS AND APPLICATION LETTER".

Oral interview Only candidates who score a minimum of 40 out of 60 points in the written exam will be admitted to the oral exam.
The oral exam (60 points maximum) consists of the following:
- a discussion on the content and methods of the candidate’s dissertation and a defence of the written exam;
- an interview discussing the curriculum, on the reasons stated for choosing that particular curriculum and on the interests the candidate has expressed;
- a language test.
The oral exam will be considered accomplished with a minimum score of 40 out of 60 points. Exam language: ITALIAN.
