Bando ordinario (expired 22/06/2023)

Educational goals and objectives

CLASSICAL AND MODERN ITALIAN STUDIES
In the 38 years of its running, the Ph.D programme in Italian Studies at Sapienza University in Rome has represented a reference point - not only in the Italian context but also abroad - for research in different fields: Italian Literature and literary studies from the Middle Ages to the contemporary age (both in Italian and other languages related to Italian literature, such as Latin and dialects), Philology, Literary theory and Comparative literature.

The Italian Studies Ph.D. programme has always targeted an interconnected approach to the Italian literary tradition, combining philological, critical, linguistic, historical approaches. A comparative perspective, open to other literary, artistic, and musical traditions is also central to the programme, as well as a methodological and theoretical engagement with Classical and Romance literary cultures.

The board of the Ph.D. programme has decided to strengthen the educational offer on the basis of the positive results achieved in the past, also taking into consideration the new institutional policies and the results achieved in the latest cycles, which proved the national and international appeal of the Italian Studies Ph.D. programme at Sapienza University. Based on such objectives, the board of the Ph.D. programme has organized specific educational pathways, with series of methodological lectures, seminars on specific topics with high-profile scholars, as well as lectures and conferences by interntional scholars on topics related to the research of postgraduate students.
Such educational opportunites tackled topics of methodological and theoretical relevance, also discussed in recent publications; such topics are widely recognized as essential formative requirements for research in the fields of philology, criticism, historiography within Italian studies, also with reference to Classical and Romance literary cultures, and theatre and cinema studies.
On such a well established track record the board of the Ph.D. programme reorganized the curriculum, from a structural and functional point of view, as a third level of higher education: this also involved a reconsideration of its specificity in the national context in the light of the structural dynamics of other Ph.D. programmes in Italian studies.
The board carefully assesses the consistency of its educational pathway by taking into consideration the needs of its students and the new dispositions concerning Ph.D programmes; it aims to provide doctoral students with opportunities to gain experience in different fields, that are coherent from the point of view of methods and critical tools and with the ongoing reforms of Ph.Dl programmes nationwide.
