More information

First-year doctoral students are required to participate in the training activities provided by the PhD board and those agreed with the tutor. These activities can also be carried out as part of the courses offered by the Master's Degrees of Sapienza. At the beginning of the first year, each student must define a study plan consistent with the topics of their research, indicating the list of courses they intend to attend, including a summary program of each chosen course, in accordance with the following criteria:

1) At least 6 credits among the teachings of the Master's Degrees of the University on the topics:
- Analysis of dynamic systems (linear and/or non-linear)
- Differential geometry
- Tensor analysis
- Perturbative methods
- Optimization methods
- Robust control
- Statistics
- Theory of signals
- Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Deep Learning

2) At least 6 credits to be chosen by the student among the courses provided in the Master's Degrees of the University.

3) At least 6 credits chosen by the student among the courses delivered by members of the teaching staff.

In addition to the training activities, seminars/lectures by teachers of the doctoral course are planned. First year doctoral students will be invited to participate in national and international conferences and congresses for which partial coverage of expenses is foreseen.

Lastly, interdisciplinary, multidisciplinary and transdisciplinary training activities will be planned for linguistic and IT specialization, as well as activities in the field of teaching, research management and knowledge of European and international research systems, valorisation and dissemination of results, intellectual property and open access to data and research products and the fundamental principles of ethics and integrity.

Method of choosing the subject of the thesis

Each doctoral student, during the first year, must agree with the teaching staff on the choice of a tutor.

Subsequently, and in agreement with his Tutor, he proposes his own research project from which the purpose of the work and the analysis methodologies to be implemented can be deduced.

Admission to the second year

At the end of the first year, the candidate presents in writing and presents in public session:

a) a statement of the activity carried out, of the courses attended, ....;

b) a report on and/or on the research topics towards which to direct one's future activity.

The following points should be clearly evident in this report:

- type of research (theoretical, experimental, planning, ...);

- possible further in-depth study of disciplines necessary to conduct the research;

More information

The training activities for the second year are agreed between the PhD student, the Tutor and the Academic Board in a way calibrated on the needs relating to the research project of each PhD student. Participation in seminars held or organized periodically by the teachers of the Collegio is foreseen.
Second year doctoral students will be invited to participate in national and international conferences and congresses for which partial coverage of expenses is foreseen.

Method of preparation of the thesis

At the beginning of the 2nd year of the course, the Academic Board decides on the research of each admitted doctoral student and makes the necessary tools and human resources available to them. Each doctoral student periodically submits a written report on the activity carried out with any recommendations and/or suggestions aimed at improving their activity. The Academic Board periodically evaluates the activity of each doctoral student and, also on the basis of an audition of the same, provides the doctoral student with the tools and human resources necessary for his activity.

Admission to the third year

At the end of the second year, the candidate submits in writing to the Academic Board and presents in public session:

- a statement of the activity carried out;

- a detailed scientific report of the research work carried out;

- the research program which will be the main topic of the PhD thesis.

The Academic Board, therefore, for each doctoral student:

-evaluates the overall activity carried out; -deliberates on the admission of the candidate to the 3rd year of the PhD course, giving reasons for the decision taken;

- deliberation, for those admitted, on the research program of the PhD thesis.

b) the new response from the referees must be received by the end of July;

c) The discussion must be carried out by the end of September.

Final examination

The exam takes place in front of a commission of 3 Italian experts appointed by the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering of the Sapienza University on proposal of the Board.
