Educational goals and objectives

AERONAUTICAL AND SPACE ENGINEERING
The PhD program in Aeronautical and Space Engineering represents the highest level of university education in the aerospace sector provided by the University of Rome La Sapienza. The PhD course aims at training the skills necessary to carry out highly qualified research activities in the aerospace field. This is a course mainly aimed at the best graduates in the aeronautical and space engineering sectors, but candidates holding a specialist or master's degree in the engineering and science sectors (or equivalent degrees or qualifications obtained abroad and recognized as suitable).

The training course involves carrying out an original research work to be completed over a three-year period. This path includes an initial phase of completion of the candidate's technical-scientific preparation acquired in the degree courses followed, then the carrying out of the research activity carried out by the candidate under the guidance of one or more of the professors of the doctoral course, and finally the elaboration of the thesis. The aim of the course is to train PhDs able to successfully enter the field of fundamental and applied research, and to develop innovative solutions typical of industrial sectors, such as aeronautics and space, which have always required border.

The educational offer of the PhD course in AERONAUTICAL AND SPACE ENGINEERING aims to train two distinct professional figures: (i) the first oriented mainly but not exclusively to fundamental research in aerospace with a view to entering the academic world and research centres, and (ii) the second mainly oriented towards the acquisition of advanced technology knowledge and skills with a view to entering the world of aerospace companies. These two educational objectives are pursued by organizing the PhD course in AERONAUTICAL AND SPACE ENGINEERING according to two Curricula, the first called Aeronautical and Space Engineering Sciences (C#1) and the second Aeronautical and Space Engineering Technologies (C#2 ).

The common objective of the two curricula is the achievement of scientific excellence, understood both in terms of the production of scientific papers and of application effects in the engineering field. The training offer of the doctorate therefore includes a number of courses common to the two curricula which contribute to the completion of the training of the doctoral student, as well as a large series of seminars, concerning both basic research topics and interventions by leading exponents of the industrial research in the aerospace field in the Italian and European context.

Admission Procedure

Qualifications assessment 1.1 Curriculum studiorum (max 32 points)
1.1.1 For students who have already graduated, at the time of assessment of qualifications, the degree grade (master's, specialist or single-cycle) is considered
1.1.2 For students who will discuss their thesis after the assessment of qualifications, the arithmetic mean of the marks achieved in the courses taken in the master's degree will be taken into consideration
1.2. Other Titles (max 12 points)
• Path of Excellence or equivalent qualification issued by other universities (2 points)
• Experience relevant to the educational objectives of the doctorate such as diplomas and training or specialization courses, collaboration grants, research grants and the like, and other activities related to the topics of the doctorate, but carried out outside the training courses of the CdS followed by the candidate (max 10 points).
• Publications (max 6 points)

Evaluation of research project

For the purposes of selection for the research doctorate, the candidate must present a project that allows assessing the candidate's propensity for research and his or her ability to organize the various phases independently. The project must have a maximum length of less than 12,000 characters (including spaces), under penalty of exclusion from the admission procedure. However, the project presented for competition purposes does not constitute a constraint in carrying out the research activity during the PhD course.
Elements of specific evaluation will include:
• Knowledge of the state of the art (4 points)
• Originality and innovative content (4 points)
• Clarity and completeness of the presentation of the objectives, methodologies and potential results (4 points)
• Relevance of the project to the educational objectives of the PhD (4 points)

Oral interview Candidates who have obtained a grade of at least 32/60 in the overall assessment of qualifications and the project are admitted to the oral test. During the oral exam, the basic knowledge and two disciplinary sectors chosen by the candidate among the five proposed (see syllabus) (max 40 points) will be verified. The Commission will also evaluate the motivations, interests and aptitude for research, through discussion of previous activity and presentation of up to 3 illustrative slides relating to the research project (max 20 points). The oral test is considered passed if the candidate has obtained at least 42/60 grade.
