In 1776, a ‘song’ was circulated in Rome that mocked the excessive use of feathers in women’s hair
styles and the disturbance they caused to spectators at theatrical performances. The text and the music of the composition enjoyed rapid and widespread diffusion and tenacious permanence, with multiple reuses and surprising attestations in half of Europe. Studying the composition invites us to reflect on the category of ‘consumer’ music and the related mechanisms of circulation in the late eighteenth century.
