Teaching and Requirements (update: Mai 31st, 2025)
First Year
Teaching
All first-year doctoral students must attend at least 34 hours of teaching dedicated to the PhD Students.
In particular, participation in the following is mandatory:
▪ 2 modules (each lasting 8 hours) organized by the PhD College in the second semester;
▪ 1 workshop (lasting 8 hours) on “Sources and tools for information retrieval” organized by the PhD College in collaboration with the Biblioteca di Filosofia in the second semester;
▪ at least 5 conferences/seminars/conventions (each lasting 2 hours) chosen from:
(1) the permanent seminars organized by the PhD College (see the “Seminars” section on the PhD website), and
(2) the conferences, seminars, and lectures promoted by the PhD College (announced on the PhD website, in the “Other scientific and educational activities” section).
Requirements
▪ In March: an inaugural day for the first year PhD Students is planned, during which they will give a brief public presentation of their research project.
▪ For the June meeting of the PhD College: submission of a provisional index with a brief description, including an outline, of the thesis project. It is not necessary for the PhD students to attend the meeting. The material must be submitted in electronic form on Classroom by May 31.
▪ For the October meeting of the PhD College, when the admission of the PhD students to the next year is decided, submission of:
(1) a first draft of a chapter and
(2) a review, discussion, or critical note, in view of a publication.
The material must be submitted to the dedicated Classroom platform by September 30. Supervisors will evaluate the submitted material and communicate their opinion to the College. PhD Students are not required to attende the meeting. Doctoral students will only be summoned to attend the Board meeting in person in the event of any critical issues.
▪ Doctoral students are required to maintain regular contact with their supervisors throughout the year.
Second Year
Teaching
All second-year PhD Students must attend at least 18 hours of teaching dedicated to the them.
In particular, participation in the following is mandatory:
▪ 1 module (lasting 8 hours) organized by the PhD College in the second semester;
▪ At least 5 conferences/seminars/conventions (lasting 2 hours each) chosen from:
(1) the permanent seminars organized by the PhD College (see the “Seminars” section on the PhD program website) and
(2) the conferences, seminars, and lectures promoted by the PhD Program (listed on the PhD program website, in the “Other scientific and educational activities” section).
Requirements
▪ In June, there will be a meeting of second-year PhD students in the form of a conference, in which each PhDstudent will publicly present a short report on part of their research. The report is intended to precede the publication of an article.
▪ For the October College meeting, when the admission of the PhD Students is decided, PhD students must submit:
(1) two chapters of their thesis, and
(2) an article for publication.
The material must be submitted using the dedicated Classroom platform by September 30. Supervisors will evaluate the submitted material and communicate their opinion to the College. PhD Students are not required to be participate in the College meeting: they will only be asked to be present in the meeting in person in the event of any critical issues.
▪ PhD Students are required to maintain regular contact with their supervisors throughout the year.
Third Year
Teaching
All third-year doctoral students must attend at least 10 hours of teaching dedicated to PhD Students.
In particular, it is mandatory to:
▪ attend at least 5 conferences/seminars/conventions (lasting 2 hours each) chosen from:
(1) the permanent seminars organized by the PhD program (see the “Seminars” section on the PhD program website), or
(2) conferences, seminars, and lectures promoted by the PhD program (listed on the PhD program website, in the “Other scientific and educational activities” section);
▪ actively hold 4 hours of supplementary teaching activities under the supervision of a master's degree professor (laurea magistrale).
Requirements
▪ For the June meeting of the PhD College: submit the work completed to date to the College and discuss it during the meeting. The material must be submitted on Classroom by May 31.
▪ By September 30: submit the complete version of the thesis to the supervisors and the coordinator.
▪ It is mandatory that, during the year, PhD students maintain regular contact with their supervisors.
