Opera Fandom in the Digital Age: an Ethnography of ‘the Gods’. Seminar by Nicolò Palazzetti

12 aprile 2022, Via dei Volsci 122, Aula E, ore 15-18

In this seminar I present my current research on opera audience from a sociological and historical perspective. More specifically, I focus on the practices and behaviours of the loggionisti in the digital age. Since Spring 2019, I have carried out ethnographic fieldwork on opera fans via in-depth interviews and participant observation. At the same time, I explored digital fandom in forums, social media and e-communities. The aim of my research is to describe the behaviours of opera fans online and offline, exploring both the socio-cultural impact of new technologies and the social and architectural heritage of peanut galleries. My main case studies involve the opera fans of the Teatro alla Scala in Milan and the blog Il corriere della Grisi. I also compare my specific areas of research with other performative environments. The seminar is also a way to foster interdisciplinary discussion and debate among doctoral students.
