After the creation and diffusion of Gregorian chant, born from the confluence of Roman-antique chant and Gallican chant in the eighth century, many European regions witnessed the composition of new chants that combined the formal structure of Gregorian with stylistic elements bearing a regional character. Southern Italy was particularly fertile in the composition of this new repertoire, which refers to musical and textual traditions attributable to the many populations, including non-Christian ones, present in the region between the 6th and 13th centuries.
