This lecture surveys the relationship between architecture and heritage through contemporary literature. Based on the Austrian writer Thomas Bernhard’s work (1931-89), three ways of looking at architectural heritage are proposed: architecture as a testimony and legacy, architecture as a monument and a desire of posterity, literature as a memory of architecture. The literary use of architecture is vindicated as a form of knowledge for our discipline, from aspects regarding the city or the landscape, to the house, the ways of living or the user.
