The seminar introduces doctoral students to the work of an international research group on Italian operetta, and explores the challenges facing those who want to deal from a historical perspective with a genre that does not seem to belong entirely to either so-called art music or "popular" music. The types of sources available and the difficulties of their identification will be given special attention, as well as the genre's medial history and its complex placement in the context of twentieth-century Italian culture.
