It is customary to make the birth of Ethnomusicology in Italy coincide with that of the foundation in Rome of the
Centro Nazionale Studi di Musica Popolare (CNSMP) in 1948, on the joint initiative of the
Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia and the RAI. The creation of audiovisual documentation of
ethnomusicological interest must however also be noted in areas that do not have specifically
scientific objectives, such as documentaries of a popular nature and certain neorealist-inspired cinema produced
from the immediate post-war period to the 1960s. The study of these sources is sporadic and
an overall vision is still lacking. The seminar will illustrate chronologically a series of cases
particularly useful for understanding the importance of these "alternative" sources and their position in the
more general framework of ethnomusicological investigation in Sicily.
