Educational goals and objectives

ENGINEERING IN COMPUTER SCIENCE
The goal of the Ph.D. in Engineering in Computer Science is to train:

i) experts in computer science and engineering able to develop new technologies and methodologies both in the academia and in public and private research institutions;
ii) specialists of very high professional level with engineering skills able to transfer technological and methodological advances into leading application sectors such as informatics and robotics, in industrial contexts, as well as in services, and public administration.

Areas of interest of the Ph.D. in Computing Science and Engineering include:

Computer architectures and networks;
Algorithm engineering and complexity analysis;
Software engineering;
Artificial intelligence;
Knowledge representation;
Artificial Intelligence and Robotics;
Information systems;
Databases;
Distributed Systems;
Web and social networks;
Software oriented computing;
Cyber security and intelligence;
Computer vision and computer graphics;
Natural Language Processing;
Human-computer interaction;
Multi-agent and Multi-robot systems.

The overall activity of Ph.D. students during the three years of the Ph.D program can be quantified in 180 ECTS credits (simply ECTS in the following), 30 of which (corresponding to 50% of work load of one year) are devoted to studying, and 150 of which (corresponding to one year and a half of work) are devoted to carrying on research and writing the thesis.

The credits are divided as following:

A
0-30 credits for completion of the curriculum of basic studies, chosen from the regular courses from the graduate and undergraduate curricula offered at Sapienza. The Admission Commission makes a proposal for the assignment of credits of type A.
B
12-18 credits for specialized modules offered by the Doctorate, by the Master Programmes or for courses offered by qualified institutions requiring a final exam, that must be approved by the Board of Lecturers.
C
12 credits for the attendance of summer schools, tutorials at conferences, and departmental seminars (usually on the basis of 0.5 credits for each 1 hour seminar), in order to ensure the integration of the post-graduate students in the life of the department and the development of multi-disciplinary competence in the various research areas of Engineering in Computer Science.

Admission Procedure

Qualifications assessment Curriculum Vitae (including the academic career and any other qualifications), letters of recommendation supporting the candidate, the presented list of publications, and the research proposal will be evaluated.
In particular, in the evaluation of the research proposal, the committee will evaluate the description of the state of the art, the originality and the innovative nature of the proposal, the clarity and completeness of the objectives, the methodologies and the potential results, and the relevance of the proposal with respect to the themes and the objectives of the Ph.D. program.

Candidates who obtained at least 36/60 in the assessment of their qualifications and project are admitted to the oral exam.

Oral interview Admission to the interview is subject to a positive evaluation of the qualifications and of the research proposal by the admissions committee. The interview is in English and is aimed at assessing the candidates' knowledge, skills, and aptitude to carry out research in the scientific areas of Computer Science and Engineering. The interview includes a discussion about the candidate's research proposal and his/her personal motivations. Its duration is at most 30 minutes and can include a candidate's proposal presentation, which has to be at most 15-minutes long.

The minimum positive score for the oral test is 36/60.

La prova orale viene svolta in inglese, e per essa la commissione di ingresso assegna a ciascun candidato ammesso all’orale un punteggio massimo di 60 punti. Nella prova orale vengono valutate, in particolare, le conoscenze, le abilità e l'attitudine dei candidati a svolgere attività di ricerca nelle aree scientifiche dell'Ingegneria Informatica. La prova orale include anche una discussione sulla proposta di ricerca preparata dal candidato e sulle motivazioni personali del candidato. La durata della prova orale è di massimo 30 minuti, inclusa un'eventuale presentazione della proposta di ricerca da parte del candidato, che non deve essere superiore a 15 minuti. La prova orale si intende superata se il candidato ottiene la votazione minima di 36/60.
The interview is in English and the maximum score a candidate can obtain is 60 points. The interview is aimed at assessing the candidates' knowledge, skills, and aptitude to carry out research in the scientific areas of Computer Science and Engineering. The interview includes a discussion about the candidate's research proposal and their personal motivations.
