Educational goals and objectives

ENGINEERING-BASED ARCHITECTURE AND URBAN PLANNING
The PhD program in “Engineering-based Architecture and Urban Planning” is aimed to train researchers through a high educational level to operate in the field of architecture and/or town planning by using a multidisciplinary and crossdisciplinary approach and appropriate methodologies and technologies.
Indeed, today, in the national scenario, a strong demand is felt for specialized, but not sectoral, researchers capable of interacting with the various components of the productive, administrative and cultural world in order to contribute, through their multidisciplinary training, to govern the complexity of both architectural work and urban design as a whole. In conclusion, the PhD program has two aims pursued by the two following curricula:
• Engineering-based Architecture curriculum:
to endow doctoral students, at the end of the training process, with research capacity that can be employed by Institutions and public or private organizations in the fields of design, building and management (until the end of the life cycle and ultimate recycling and/or disposal) of the architectural organism, the building elements and materials, both in constructing new buildings and in the rehabilitation and restructuring of existing buildings.
• Urban Planning curriculum:
to introduce graduate students to the issues related to organizing and planning of cities and territories and to the environmental impact of human pressure on nature, investigating new social tools and practices for a sustainable development of the city and the land.
As regards specific objectives, the PhD-program will set up a training synergism with the scientific sectors involved in technical physics, materials technology, the history of architecture, the social and economics sciences.

Competenze richieste: Innovation in building systems is related to a broad spectrum of actors, technicians, scholars, manufacturing and construction companies, and is realized in response to a wide range of environmental, safety, and design needs. Recently there has been a focus on new performance areas related, for example, to indoor and outdoor environmental qualities, of being and health. This opens up a field of research within which it is possible to grasp the interdisciplinary synergies that are activated when architecture and construction tend toward the achievement of new thresholds of quality or the crossing of a limit. The proposal is developed in coherence with several missions of the NRP in particular the following: 1. Digitization, Innovation, Competitiveness, Culture and Tourism, 2, Green Revolution and Ecological Transition, and 6 Health.

A. BUILDING ENGINEERING ARCHITECTURE
B. URBAN PLANNING
The statement of purposes will be evaluated on the basis of:
- aptitude for research
- reasons for the interest in this PhD program
- clear matching between research proposal and research areas within this PhD program

• Research project (max 40 points)
In order to make the selection for the PhD, each candidate must present a project that can allow the evaluation of both his/her aptitude for research and his/her ability to plan and organize independently the different phases of the project.
The text cannot exceed the
maximum length of 15,000 keystrokes (bibliography included).
The research proposal presented for admission is not intended as an obligation, for the admitted candidates, to the subsequent development of the research activity during the PhD program.
In particular, will be evaluated:
- knowledge of the state of the art
- originality and innovative content of the proposal
- clarity and completeness of the exposition of the goals, the methodologies and the potential results
