Ana putri kang ayu rupane: studi su gender, cross-gender e ‘mystical gender’ all’interno delle arti scenico-musicali indonesiane

Seminar by Ilaria Meloni (Università di Roma “La Sapienza”)

15/06/2023, ore 10, Facoltà di Lettere e Filosofia

The study of gender in different musical cultures is an extremely complex and diverse field of research. Music expresses and reflects the social and cultural values of a community, and in this sense, gender presents itself as a key element in the creation and representation of identities. However, the 'performed' gender identity does not always correspond to the gender identity of artists as individuals in everyday life. Rather, it is the result of a negotiation that has deeper roots in the historical and political substratum of a given society.
By presenting some case studies related to Indonesia, the lecture aims to highlight how gender studies in music can help to understand the processes of construction and negotiation of ethical, aesthetic, physical and metaphysical identities and meanings within a given culture, as well as to highlight the inequalities, processes of transformation and hierarchies of power that may emerge from such processes.
