More information

The first-year courses are divided into three terms. The courses offered in the first term, all mandatory, are provided by the Doctorate in Economics for the Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, and Econometrics courses. The other courses are provided by the MEF Doctorate, which belongs to the School. The courses offered in the second term are mandatory for the four modules provided by the Doctorate in Economics (Research Methods). The other courses in the second/third term offered by other Doctorates/curricula in collaboration with or belonging to the School are optional (all students in the Doctorate in Economics will attend at least two of these courses). For the second/third term, only the courses/seminars provided by the Doctorate in Economics are listed. Doctoral students can also participate in other courses/seminars offered by Doctorates/curricula in collaboration with or belonging to the School. Method of choosing the subject of the thesis

At the end of the first-year course cycle, the doctoral candidate agrees with its advisor on the topic of study that will be developed in the thesis.

Admission to the second year

Mandatory passing of exams, analysis by the college of the student's activity. The student must pass all exams in the first term and at least three in the second term. Only one recovery session is planned.

List of courses / activities for the second year

More information

During the second year, doctoral students participate in seminar activities organized by the doctoral program and department on topics of interest. At the end of the second year, students are required to present the progress of their ongoing research to all members of the doctoral program's Board of professors. Additionally, students are encouraged to participate in summer schools related to their research path, whose costs are covered by dedicated doctoral program funds, with prior approval from the Coordinator.

The doctoral program organizes periodic internal seminars where doctoral students present the first results of their research. At the end of the year, a workshop is organized where second-year students formally present their research project and one of their ongoing works to other students, members of the Board, and interested department members. For each presentation, an expert discussant in the subject matter is identified.

Method of preparation of the thesis

The development of the thesis is based on supervised research work and presentation of the proposal to the Board of professors. The student, in agreement with their own Tutor and based on their research interests, proposes to the Board a research project and a supervisor who will closely follow the progress of the work. It is strongly recommended that, during this period, the doctoral student spends part of the year in another research institution, preferably abroad.

Admission to the third year

Analysis by the Board of professors of the research activity. The faculty committee evaluates the admission of the doctoral candidate to the following year based on the results of the aforementioned research day and a report on the activities carried out during the year, drafted by the doctoral candidate and verified by their tutor.

List of courses / activities for the third year

More information

During the third year, the PhD students participate in seminar activities organized by the doctorate program. Additionally, students are encouraged to spend a period abroad at academies or international institutions to finalize their research in progress. Also for third-year students, periodic internal occasions are organized where doctoral students present the results of their research. At the end of the year, a workshop is organized where students formally present their completed research to other students, members of the faculty, and members of the interested Department. An expert discussant is identified for each presentation.

Method of admission to the final examination

Supervised activity. Upon approval from the supervisor, in July or September of their third year of study, the doctoral candidate presents to the college the results of their research and their study intentions for the last few months.

Based on this presentation, the Board of professors decides whether to send the doctoral thesis to external evaluators, specialists in the research area of the thesis, by October 31 (unless there are suspensions and/or extensions). The evaluators provide a written assessment by December 1 (or two months from the submission of the thesis in case of suspensions or extensions).

Based on these evaluations, the Board of professors either admits the student to the final examination or requests an extension of work for up to 6 months.

Final examination

The examination committee (which, in line with international practice, is unique for each candidate) is proposed by the Board of professors for approval by the Department Council for rectoral appointment, based on the expertise related to the topics of the theses. The final examination takes place within the month of February of the year following the end of the doctoral course, except in cases of suspension and/or extension of the academic path. This deadline can be extended by the college, based on the judgments of external evaluators, for a maximum of six months and in line with regulatory provisions.
