The aim of this conference is to reflect on the Comintern’s unique nature as a transnational organization which focused not only on politics but also on other aspects of social and cultural life in the years 1919-1943. In fact, the Communist International did not restrict itself to coordinate the political action of its affiliate parties (which were officially its national sections) but, thanks to its sponsored organizations, it dealt with the main socio-economic problems of its time such as – to name but a few – the women’s emancipation (through the Communist Women’s International) and that of oppressed people (through the League Against Imperialism), the economic and material support to the political prisoners (through the International Red Aid), and the support to the peasants (through the Krestintern). It was, therefore, a wide organization which, thanks to its global ramification and its marked international nature, succeed in competing with other international organizations (such as, first of all, the Labour and Socialist International) and in raising hopes and expectations inside a wide segment of world population. Exactly these international aspects will be analyzed in this international .
