Physical model testing for coastal structures
01/03/2019
Physical model testing is an essential step in the process of designing coastal structures such as breakwaters, dikes, bed protections and storm surge barriers. The lecture will give an overview of physical model facilities, measurement techniques, examples of applied research projects and innovations in projects for the design of coastal structures. The lecture is focused on coastal structures projects in laboratory facilities at Deltares, Delft, The Netherlands, including the wave flume with the highest human-made waves in world.
CO2 capture and utilisation via aqueous mineral carbonation
12/11/2019
The Seminar will be held by Prof. Eric Kennedy (University of Newcastle). Mineral carbonation has the potential to store billions of tonnes of CO2 safely and permanently. The purpose of our research is to investigate the potential of transforming CO2 into stable solid carbonates. The presented study is part of a major research project being conducted at the University of Newcastle to investigate mineral carbonation from laboratory to pilot scale. A research pilot plant is currently in operation at the University of Newcastle, where a 30 L batch reactor commenced operation in 2016. One important aim of this work is to compare pilot plant results to laboratory data obtained under similar reaction conditions. CO2 can be captured from gas streams by use of solutions augmented with reactive alkaline minerals. These minerals dissolve in contact with the CO2-saturated solution which, in the case of heat-activated serpentine, yield aqueous magnesium bicarbonate. Decarbonation, or the controlled removal of CO2 from these resultant aqueous solutions, increases pH engendering supersaturation sufficient for precipitation of magnesium carbonates. The precipitation of magnesium carbonates in effect sequesters the captured gaseous CO2 in solid mineral form. This staged pathway to mineralisation of CO2 emissions thus relies on the operation of separate but linked mineral dissolution and precipitation process units. The overall process, configured to incorporate recovery or recycling of liquid and gas streams, can be operated under relatively mild conditions.

Monitoring chemical water quality through mass spectrometry based non-target screening
05/08/2020
The Seminar will be held by Prof.ssa Andrea Mizzi Brunner (Scientific researcher - Chemical Water Quality and Health | KWR Water Research Institute | Nieuwegein, the Netherlands). The ever increasing production and use of chemicals augment their occurrence in drinking water and its sources to an extent that monitoring using targeted chemical analyses alone is no longer sufficient. Complementary methods, referred to as suspect and non-target screening, are required that are able to detect a multitude of chemicals simultaneously, including mobile and polar compounds in low concentrations. These methods rely on liquid chromatography coupled to high resolution mass spectrometry in combination with novel data analysis workflows. The range of challenges in their application and strategies to overcome these will be presented in the seminar, such as the identification of “known unknowns” and “unknown unknowns” in different water matrices and the confidence thereof, the automation of non-target screening data analysis, and the use of cheminformatics and data mining for the prioritization of suspect chemicals. Thereby, the webinar will provide an overview of methods to support the water sector in realistically assessing the human and environmental health risks of (emerging) contaminants.
